Setting up a budget ?
I need to set up a new accounting/budget system for my family. I've been doing this in Excel for years. I have a 'cash' account spreadsheet with week by week summaries of expenses (really a payment schedule), with budget forecasts for same. The whole thing is filled out at the beginning of the year in red, then the actuals are entered in black. The problem is that I have to do a lot of double entry. At tax time, my spreadsheet isn't 'complete', so I have to go back and enter into a...

Categorizing income from sale of personal property or Budget?
I'm wondering how others here categorize the money they receive when they sell an item of personal property. In the past I had an income category set up just for such occasions. There's basically no tax implications at the levels I'm talking about so there's no real reason to track it as income. It occurs to me that sometimes it might be beneficial to apply the income back to an expense category that relates to the item I've sold. That way I can get a better indication of my actual...

Like it or not: Prepare for budget cuts?
I really must express my dismay at reading some of the vitriolic comments leveled against Michael Scriven, particularly the fairly recent ones by Anne Pemberton. While my personal schedule has allowed me not much more than a glance at the thread regarding 25% budget reductions in education, what I did glean from the discussion certainly does not appear to justify those types of acid attacks. Through the years I have found that people make comments based solely on their own perspect...

Business use of a personal car ?
In the past I have always had a company car. Recently I was given the option of continuing with a company car or being reimbursed on my personal car. I think I would be either given a flat monthly car allowance or receive .375 for each mile driven. The car allowance would be treated as a fringe benefit, which I think would cause me some tax headaches. I like the idea of buying my own car, however, I'm not sure of what type of tax problems might arise. My questions are as follows:...

Deductions for personal car used for business ?
For several years I've claimed the modest use (about 5000 mi./yr. business use) of my personal car for business use (minus commuting, and employer reimbursement, etc.). Usually I'm right around the 2% floor anyway and some years below it. But, this year I've sold my car (vehicle 1) and bought a new one (vehicle 2). I notice that on Form 2106, Vehicle Expenses Worksheet, Part VI covers disposition of a vehicle. It would seem that there's a huge tax savings if I fill this section out...

CAR WASHING ?
I'm here in Texas in 95 + degree weather & a respiratory problem. So it's unlikely that I'm going to do any personal, manual summer time car washing I don't want to hurt my CR-V's beautiful finish but these are the most convenient alternatives I have open to me: (I've been using them on my 1989 Volvo which I didn't love as much as my CR-V) 1) Gas station small automatic car wash. The kind that gently sprays soap & water & then rinses. I've found it to do a good job without ...

TurboTax Personal Property Tax Question ?
I am using TurboTax for the first time and everything seems to be going smoothly, except I am lost on one thing. TurboTax asks me if I had paid any "Personal Property Taxes" during 2003. To me, that includes the $280 in propery taxes I paid on my car. But, TurboTax descibes Personal Property Tax as taxes on "boats, motor homes, etc." Since most people own an automobile and pay property taxes on it, I find it odd TurboTax would mention boats and motor homes as an example of this t...

Personal Property Tax Car, necessary or not?
OK .. I give up. Waht is the story on WHERE (I assume you still can) put your personal property tax for your cars in turbo tax. It mentions some states can take a portion of their registration fees (Virginia is NOT one of the state listed) but under OTHER personal property it shows boats etc. but no cars. Can I still deduct my county personal property tax on cars and if so WHERE ???The personal property tax on cars goes in the same place as the same tax on boats would go. Remembe...

MA personal property tax for cars - which line on Schedule A?
Do I report the Massachusetts personal property tax I paid on my car on line 3A (auto registration fee based on the value of the vehicle), or line C (other personal property taxes)? I guess the phrase "registration fee" is throwing me here.-That's going to depend on how the Massachusettes DMV treats its registration fees. They are the ones to ask. Whichever part of the registraion fee is for personal property taxes based on the value goes on that line, and the whichever part of the r...

Monthly Budget changes ?
I'm using Quicken 2002 to track a family budget. I love the software as it makes it easy to record all of our families spending. I have used quicken off and on for years, but have been using the same budget since September. My problem has to do with adjusting the amounts budgeted for different categories. Let me use an example.. I give myself 100 dollars of personal money per month. That was good for the period of Sept - Dec of last year. Now I have decided, because of financial ch...

PERSONAL FINANCE/HOME BUDGET TEMPLATE ?

On-line money management: worth it?
In your experience, is it really worth the configuration work to set up Quicken accounts, and then use Quicken for personal money management? I'm a programmer by trade, so using the software powerfully isn't an issue. I just wonder if it's worth creating the accounts, entering all of the data, and maintaining it over time. My personal situation isn't that complex: I have no dependents, I rent my accommodation, and have a 401(k) and a couple of other investment accounts. This enquirin...

WDW and personalized car tags ?
The other day I saw a truck with a disney related personalized car tag. I was wondering if anyone out there had one of their own and what it says.I love that.....wish I had thought of it!! My station wagon's license plate is D1ZKNEE. Darn if someone didn't think of it before my husband (bless his heart he was the one who came up with it for his Disney addicted wife). But I keep checking back with our DMV, so if they ever let it lapse, I'll get mine with the i.........

Car Tags, new style?
Who drove that car to ConFurence East with the car tags that said "YIFFY" ?Last time I waited in line for car tags here in Texas I noticed a collection of personalized plates nailed to the wall they had received over the years. One said WANTED. Texas limits personalized plates to only six letters. That's why I can't get GIRAFFE for my Metro. New York State's limit is seven letters, as witnessed by someone there with a HEPCATS tag....
