Finance Q&A

Yearly Free Credit Report

Edwards Finance > Credit Check

Q. I have a question. One we're married, how does that affect our credit. My fiance has a bad credit history, and we're concerned that it may affect MY chances of getting loans, etc. If I am buying something by myself, and applying for the loan myself (or with my parents to cosign, but NOT my husband) will they consider his credit history at all since he will be my husband at that point, or will they just look at mine?

A. Most banks and financial advisors recommend you check all your credit reports yearly. You can not control who requests your credit report. Anytime that you get a pre-approved card your credit report may have been checked. It is not held against you if you have many parties checking your report. Therefore, that does not reflect poorly on your credit. The actual entries on your account (your credit cards, loans, etc) are the only thing that counts when deciding if your credit to good or not. The three credit reporting companies are: Equifax www.equifax.com Experian www.experian.com Trans Union www.transunion.com There is a charge for some people to get the report (depends on what state you live in) and you are entitled to a free report every calendar year by one of the companies. Also if you are denied credit for any reason you are entitled to a free credit report at any time. The fees are around $8 and well worth it if you are looking to get loan of any kind. These reports are out there on each of us and you would be surprised how many wrong things are on them. If you want to get a mortgage and your credit report comes back bad due to wrong information it can be fixed but it takes time. It took me 2 months to get them to put the correct spelling of my last name and to take off the 2 car loans they said I defaulted on (which where not my loans ... they belonged to a woman whose name was the name they were misspelling mine as). You will not get the mortgage until the credit report issue is cleared up. This can hurt you if you want to lease an apartment, hook up a phone, get cable, buy a car, or get a loan to go to grad school.
