Wireless Credit card processing? info please

Edwards Finance > Credit Card

Q. Wireless Credit card processing? info please I sell rare records at conventions and on the street. Needless to say, I will increase my sales if I can accept credit-cards. I'm selling at a big record convention this sunday and want to know if it's possible to process credit cards in a *secure* wireless manner. I've seen other dealers use regular cell-phones, which is pretty risky. There are hundreds if not thousands of cellular hackers scanning for just this type of info..(credit card numbers). I've been reliably informed that encrypted/scrambled data schemes are accompanied by an electronic "flag" which makes them stand out, and your data then becomes a "challenge" and is given extra attention by said hackers! Do any banks, cellular carriers and/or credit card companies have reliable and affordable solutions to this problem? What about wireless email with heavy encryption? (Using, for example, the Motorola "Marco" or "Envoy"?) Does anyone have any brilliant ideas? I am going to get in touch with the Hotel to see about a one-day phone-line lease, which if affordable would be the obvious solution. But wireless would be great for street-fair vending and other impromptu situations!

A. - Credit card verification can certainly be done over the cellular network. Both the voice network (circuit switch) and CDPD. The advantage, of course, with CDPD is the speed and the encryption, but the downside is the coverage area. Where are you located? US Wireless makes a POS 50 for the circuit switch network and the POS 500 for the CDPD network. - That's a pretty harsh statement. CDPD is not deployed in every city in the United States but is deployed in almost every major city. There are many applications being written for it at this time, including wireless POS, transportation, field service, email and Public Safety applicaitons. Actually, any application written for the internet will run over CDPD, because it takes advantage of TCP/IP it also an encrypted network and runs at a speed of 19.2. I realize I work for a CDPD provider, and am a bit biased, but it is a solid, reliable and fast network. - That's a pretty harsh statement.
