Finance Q&A

Will Law and Order pass Gunsmoke

Edwards Finance > Wills

Q. Next to Law and Order GUNSMOKE is my all time favorite t.v show. GUNSMOKE lasted on CBS for 20 years (1955-1975) Do you think that Law and Order will make it to 20 seasons, or do you think they will fold before then? I would love to see them make season 21 myself

A. -That would be 7 more seasons after this one. Will never happen. -I don't see why it won't/can't, barring a severe dropoff in viewers in the next year or two. Although it is possible to run the other two shows if L&O isn't on the air, NBC might find it a challenge if the "mother" show is gone. That means there are three shows that rest on L&O's success, three hours of time. All three shows are currently in the top 30 (the oldest in the top 5, the second oldest in the top 20). Most shows get to limp along at least a year or two once they get hopelessly lame, and a show with L&O's history and momentum could probably limp along with even twice that. The cast changeovers in the top line are the biggest challenges. I don't necessarily see that either has to leave imminently, but to expect seven more years out of both might be a challenge. Even still, and even if their replacements are not as good, I still see the show carrying on for a while longer.they're replaced, and (just say) the replacements are lame, we can probabl get another 2-4 years out of the show that way. That's darned close to the "required" 7 years. I say it'll happen. That also said, and not wanting they anywhere near that revolving door, I happen to (perhaps for the first time) agree with Walt on possible replacements.
