Finance Q&A

Where can I get a free credit report?

Edwards Finance > Credit Report

Q. I've tried a few places and they all seem to want either a credit card or money. While I don't mind paying them

A. Credit reports cost about $10-$12. If you get one for "free" then there's going to be a catch, the company is hoping to get something from you that costs more than $10 and then offers you a credit report to lure you in. Usually it means signing up for a service that has a monthly fee for "securing" your credit. They expect to get your credit card so they can charge you this monthly fee. If you're quick and cancel immediately, you can get your credit report "free" but I've talked to a couple of people who tried this - usually they had to cancel 4 or 5 times to get it to go through, reverse charges on their credit cards, etc. To me, it's not worth the hassle, to save $10. Some states have a law that requires a free credit report per year. The list I found a while back was Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey or Vermont. If you live in one of those states you can get a credit report for free. The other way to get a free credit report is to be turned down for credit. If you're turned down, the turn down letter will include information about how to get your free report. Some people apply for credit they wouldn't qualify for, just to get that free report. This might be OK as a one time thing, but having too many "credit requests" on your credit report gives you a negative rating. So I'd be wary.
