What Is A Living Will?

Q. What Is A Living Will?

A. - living wills are ignored for suicide attempts. The law assumes that one who attempts suicide is not in their right mind, which then invalidates the living will which makes it mandatory for medical workers to attempt to revive you. In cases of non-suicide, living wills are usually honored. However, it is a good idea to talk about the living will with both your doctor and your family. If no one knows about the living will, they won't know to honor it. Also, if the family objects, they can usually over ride it when you are unconcious. But if the doc knows of it, it gives you a better chance. Plus, you can make sure your doc and your family are all on the same page with the living will. We did this with my grandparents a while ago, but it's probably a good idea for people of any age. -These are creatures of state law. Look up "durable power of attorney", "durable power of attorney for health care decisions", or "living will" with reference to your state in particular. Or better yet, see a lawyer, because a lawyer can draw up one that is more likely to succeed if it should ever happen to be needed.
