Voip and security systems ?Q. I've been experimenting with Voip service (Lingo) with good results but cannot seem to crack the rj-31x/line siezure issue. I have a structured wiring sytem with security system interface that's been working fine with ma-bells signal (50 V Dc). I connect the voip adapter and measured the voltage on the tip line coming out of it and is very weak - on the order of 10's of millivolts. Howvever, it works fine when its output signal is punched down to distribute Voip service to all phone lines in the house. If however, I punch down before the RJ-31x such that the Voip output goes to the security system first, dial tone is no longer present on the other lines in the house. I suspect that their is a line siezure relay in the security panel that requires a minimum voltage to operate correctly in order to return the telelphone signal back to the house. Does anyone here have any experience with this problem? I'm thinking I need to amp up the voip phone adapter output somehow. A. I Have checked with several major panel makers all say there panels are not designed to be used with VOIP and many say the have no plans to come out with a panel which will handle voip. and doing so is at your own risk. they reccomend IP or wireless monitoring for assured signal transmission. In making inquiries amongst various vendors and suppliers, it seems that IS the bottom line. Clients who choose to use VoIP for their alarm systems are throwing the dice to some degree. While it works and tests OK today, tomorrow it may not since it depends upon the veracity and quality levels of the internet (which to date is still not 100% reliable. Based on my own limited experience, panels won't answer an incoming call in many cases as well so it limits the ability to download the panel. I intend to advise people in writing of these severe limitations and they can make their choice, but it will be my simple recommendation to NOT use VoIP with their alarm panel...period !! I am with you on this subject....I would not mind using a transmityter on a network to send back up signal... But i would not trust this over my life...or for the security of my family Same for voip telephone line..
