Finance Q&A

Banks, Visa,credit and college students

Edwards Finance > Credit Card

Q. Banks, Visa, credit and college students ? Banks, with college permission, show up on college campuses giving out credit cards like Santa Clause gives candy. Usually, it's for $500.00 until a payment pattern is established, then upward. Students find themselves as much as $5,000.00 in debt before graduating and under the thumb of 18% annual interest. Under the stress of debt, these students turn to excessive tobacco use. I think if the government is gong to outlaw tobacco, it should outlaw banks giving credit cards to college students between the ages of 16 to 21. Have problem with Visa Credit Card?

A. - I agree. My daughter has been given a free checking account along with everyone else at UVA, if she banks at Wachovia. That I didn't mind. But, when she started getting credit cards, it went too far. She has Master Card, Visa, American Express and Discover and keeps getting more applications in the mail every day. I have warned her and she only uses one card. However, they keep raising her credit limit. Most have given her $1,500 and she's a full time student with a part-time job. My bosses son is in law school and has a $6,500 bill to pay off. He even used part of it to pay for college. Much heavier interest than student loans. They really should stop sending cards to students without their parents willing to co-sign. Since when can you get a loan without a co-signer when you are under 21? - Believe it or not I was at the coffee shop with two of my neighbors yesterday and this very subject came up. It is astounding the number and limits of credit cards that are sent to College Freshmen some as young as 17. We have three universities in Abilene TX. Abilene Christian University (Church of Christ) Hardin Simmons University (Baptist) and McMurry University (Methodist) as well as a branch of Cisco Junior College. We also have Dyess Air Force Base so there are a lot of young people in our area that are far from home with high limit credit cards in hand and no will power
