Does anyone know the rules about military paying state income taxes in Virginia?

Edwards Finance > Income Tax

Q. Does anyone know the rules about military paying state income taxes in Virginia? Specifically, does a military member from another state have to pay Virginia state income tax? What if the military member purchases a home in Virginia? Does buying a home make the military member a resident?

A. I don't claim to be an expert, but typically you need to establish residency in a state to get on their tax rolls. Buying a house, getting that state's drivers license, registering to vote are examples. A good place to look is in a state's Tax return booklet for their rules. While I was active duty in Virginia, I registered to vote in Nevada to avoid paying Iowa taxes. I used my parent's address for this. You'll need to update your record with disbursing so they stop taking out money. -My info is dated as I have been retired for several years. I maintained my legal address in Michigan at my parents home. I voted regularly in Michigan to keep my address current. I also had a Michigan drivers license. At various times I owned homes in both California and Washington State when I was stationed there. I even retained the homes as a rental when I was transferred overseas. Each year California sent me a tax form, which required me to send them a letter telling them that I was a resident of Michigan. -Lived in Virginia since 1979, I am a Florida resident. I am not required to pay income or personal property tax.
