Vancouver School District ?Q. Computer death did not occur in my household, but my iMac was in trouble, with frequent crashes and an inability to access many web sites. The on/off button worked only half the time, and I couldn't plug speakers into it. An ungodly whine was coming from the hard drive or some board. And slow! EBay was hardly worth the trouble, not that that's a bad thing. My son talked me into buying an iMac G4 Tower and 20" Apple Cinema monitor. It was installed yesterday, and...Wow! We have also bought a La Cie external hard drive which has plenty of capacity to back up both my hard drive and my wife's iBook hard drive many times over, so I think that we can relax now about ever losing data. I'll keep the hard drive in our storage locker and use it for back-ups every few weeks. The G4 (once I buy a second hard drive for it) can be used to back up files automatically every few hours. I hope -- how I hope! -- that this system lasts a few years.... I heard recently that an entire (small) school district here in British Columbia has purchased a laptop computer for every student. How can they afford that? What happens when the inevitable progress of technology forces the installation of pricey new operating systems, not to mention hardware? The Vancouver School Board is forecasting a $3 million deficit and planning to lay off scores of teachers. The world is nuts. We can't seem to live without computers, but can we live with them? I can't imagine not having a computer and the internet and Usenet A. And to think that kids today have no idea what a typewriter is! My boss and I were doing a presentation to school kids the other day, mentioned a typewriter, and got a lot of blank stares.
