Used Business Phone System, Xtra botch-up and the Palmerston North telephone system.
Q. Several years ago, the Palmerston North phone exchange 'fell over' during an upgrade and backup tapes failed to load. Come morning, the phones were dead, no 111, no nothing. Later in the day, they got the phones going after a fashion, but not completely since the only available backup tape was 6 months old. The whole matter was taken very, very seriously and a senior manager's head rolled (probable along with some others). Compare this to the Xtra E-mail botch-up. It has taken about a week for Telecom management to realise they had a serious situation on their hands. It appears that they thought that the E-mail service was used only for social and recreational purposes - it seemed to have slipped their minds that their business customers actually use E-mail.
A. While it is true that some businesses use an "xtra" email address, I would have expected that most businesses would have their own domain name and email servers either hosted by the same org that hosts their Apache server, or their own email servers. It's only email. Any business that relies only on email is being just plain silly. Email should not be a core part of any business. Has everyone forgotten fax? Has everyone forgotten the phone? Has everyone forgotten the ordinary post. Any business that complains that it is losing business because of email problems is sooner rather than later going to go out of business! I'm thinking, a hundred years or more ago, the first telephone outage happens, and some grizzled old heads are going "It's only the telephone. Any business that relies only on the telephone is being just plain silly. Telephones should not be a core part of any business. Has everyone forgotten sending little boys across town with notes? Has everyone forgotten the pneumatic tube delivery system? Has everyone forgotten actually going around in person to see people?" Yes, whatever happened to those messenger guys who used to run for miles carrying a post-it note in a forked stick?
