U.S. Income Taxes: Voluntary or Not??Q. U.S. Income Taxes: Voluntary or Not?? A. -Give us some of your wages or we won't protect you from our armed stooges." Is it "voluntary" if give them your money? -The taxes are not voluntary, they are mandatory. The tax collection sytem relies on voluntary compliance. But if you don't voluntarily comply with the law, you will be forved to do so. -That sounds like an oxymoron: enforced voluntariness!! In which section of the United States Code does it say, the government may enforce either an unwritten law or on which states that compliance is voluntary??? -The term voluntary compliance shows nowhere in the Code since compliance is not voluntary. That's why there are criminal penalties for failure to comply. They are enforcing written laws, specifically Title 26. The term "voluntary compliance" refers to the system of self assessment. In simpler terms people fill out their tax returns themselves without waiting for the government to go through their records and send them a bill. If they don't then the IRS will calculate their tax and either charge them criminally or make civil assessments and collect by enforced means. Perhaps it would be easier to compare it to traffic laws. Traffic regulation relies on voluntary compliance with things such as stop signs. You either voluntarily stop or you don't and you continue through. If the police happen to see you going through you will suffer a criminal penalty. There are not police at every single traffic sign putting an obstacle or a gate in front of you to make you stop. They rely on your sense of duty to obey the law. In 99% of the cases, at least for stop signs, it's works. I am giving you the benefit of the doubt in providing this answer. If you still want to argue it find someone else to waste time with.
