jury duty for US District court?

Edwards Finance > Bankruptcy

Q. I've been summoned for jury duty for the US District court in Birmingham. I'm looking for comments from those who have done this. Did you stay in Birmingham (they pay) or commute? I know some were dismissed due to lack of trials.

A. -General tour of duty is 1 week per month for 6 months. You call ahead to see if they need you in the jury pool for that month. If you live in Huntsville they will pay for your mileage or if you have to stay overnight. Pay is $40 /day pluse expenses. If you stay overnight they allot you about $90 /day. They don't really dismiss you - you go in the jury pool - you may or may not have any trials. It could be worse if you get assigned to a special task force pool your tour could be up to 2 years. This is info from about 3 years ago when I served on the Fed Grand Jury in Birmingham. Note that traffic into Birmingham is always crowded in the mornings, and wrecks all over. -I got called to Sheffield for the US Discrict court. It was the third time in about a three year period that I had been called for jury duty. I complained. It did no good. I just made the drive every day for a week. At the time, the pay was a whopping $10 per day. Actually, I've been lucky in that I actually got to be on a jury each of the times I've had to go. It is always a learning experience.
