Q. I live/work in USA. I'm on work permit here in USA. I cant have social security number. I never applied for credit. My husband, who have social security number have applied for credits here and there. But I dont have social security and I never applied for one and I also never applied for credit.Can anyone help me/

A. they don't need a social security number, though it *is* used as a tool (along with driver's license numbers, passport numbers, and other indentifying information) to identify people. you may have been reported because you owe someone money and didn't pay them. we do that all the time when tenants skip out on us and owe us money, especially if we have a court judgment from an eviction or small claims action. if the debtor has no assets for us to execute the judgment on, or if we can't file a small claims action because we can't find a skipped debtor to serve her/him, we assign the debt to our local collection agency for collection. if the agency can locate the debtor, they will attempt to collect the debt. if they can't locate the debtor, or if the debtor doesn't make payments, they will report it to transunion and the other 2 agencies, so if the debtor ever does apply for credit, a credit check will show the debt as a negative item. lenders usually require that such debts be paid before they will consider granting a loan. you should be happy they told you about it now, rather than finding out about it when you apply for a loan and get refused. if it's an error, you should take steps to correct the error; if it's because you have unpaid debts, you should pay off the debt as quickly as you can, since it will probably remain on your record for 7 years.
