Time Warner digital phone service ?Q. they are now offering it in my area - does anyone have comments/opinions from using it themselves or know anyone who has?? A. i use comcast, which used to be ATT, which used to be mediaone, owned by time warner. same hardware, same lines, just a bunch of ownership changes. that said, i pay $16/mo for my serivice, and ive been really happy with it. quality is no different than the $27/mo i was paying GTE (now verizon). cheaper, and just as good. I have been using Comcast (used to be ATT, Time Warner, Paragon....) digital phone in MN for about 6 months. It is currently out of service. No incoming our outgoing calls possible. They don't have 24-hour customer service so I had to wait until this morning to get ahold of them. The person responded they knew about the problem, had someone coming to look at it this morning, and I didn't need to be home. One of the reasons I was reluctant to change to digital phone was because my phone service through Qwest (US West) NEVER went out. Ever. Power went out, heat went out, cellphone went out, but the home phone always worked. In an emergency, I always could count on my landline. I was reluctant to change because I did not want to have my phone service drop out as often as my cable dropped out. I finally fell for the package deal of digital phone/internet/cable. My fear was realized and now my damn landline is no more stable than my cable service (which is also having problems). I spent an hour burning up minutes on my cellphone talking to the the morons in customer service at Comcast. I have come to the conclusion that Scott Adams (Dilbert) was correct when he said "The cable companies are staffed by people too stupid to get jobs with the phone company." Although I'm from Canada, our experience with Cable-phone seems to be about the same. People complain about the service being shady sometimes, never a problem with the Telco. It costs less than Telco, you get less reliable service. Last fall a hurricane hit my province. Power was out, most of the distribution lines were back up in a week, some individual homes in the city weren't reconnected till two weeks later. The battery packs the cable company has on the poles only last 12 hours. There were many people upset because they lost phone service for so long. The cable company rushed around and tried to pick up gensets for as many of the pole mounted battery pack thingies as they could. They had several gensets stolen (many desperate people without power) so they ended up hiring kids off the high school's football team to baby-sit them. Also, the non-Telco's cell service was also patchy because the wind knocked the alignment off of their microwave towers. Through the storm and the outage my Telco phone and internet still worked, as did my Telco cellphone.
