Harassed? SUE THE PHONE COMPANY! ?

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. I have not had such a blatant experience, but am constantly called by telemarketers at all hours. I have concluded that I am the one providing the phone line these calls come in on.

A. Assign your home line (incoming dialtone) to your computer as data/fax/internet ONLY. Ring circuit can be disabled. Voice messages may be received with the right software, if desired. Call out locally all you want, if needed. Cancel your long distance and LATA (local area toll) service on this line. Get a cell phone for all your personal calls. Get a plan with no roam. You have nationwide coverage, voiemail, call wait/fwd and ID for one price. You may not need a line to your house at all, if you don't have a computer, or if you use cable modem or DSL. Screw the local phone company AND their BS. Imagine a scenario where 50-60% of local users just eliminated their home telephone service and went to 100% cell. The phone companies are, and it scares the hell out of them. As a former telemarketer (hating every minute of it) I can say that the response to _every_ call should be "Please remove my name and phone number from your calling list.." Document that call and response. If that telemarketer calls again, you have grounds for a major financial recovery. When I used to get some hang ups every now and then, then I got a caller id. the hang ups showed up as "private", so they must be pressing *67. So I turned on my call rejection *77, this stopped most of the hang ups. And if the hanger-upper wants to call again, he will have to not press *67 and reveal himself. Hanger-upper must be a newbie, because I do know of ways to bypass *77 and caller id's, and he just used *67. I have used one of those free based voice mail services. I got a dedicated number 215-895-9658, and I can give that out, without having a dinner interupted by telemarketers. They can convey themselves on a 2 minute voice mail wich I can listen to later, not in the middle of my dinner. I know it.. caller ids and *77 are so easy to get by. luckily, my hanger-upper was just a newbie, so a simple *77 filtered him out. My voice mail is so much better, rather than hearing it ring, I can hear those threats when I feel like it. I get my finger on the delete key (3 on phone) and if it's just some telemarketer nut, delete! delete! delete!
