Reply to McAdams/Reitzes on Ferrie-West Phone Call and Brading ?Q. In other words, by sheer coincidence, someone used the phone of Mafia kingfish Carlos Marcello's attorney to make a fifteen-minute call to the one building in all of Chicago where Jean West just happened to be staying, and by sheer coincidence this same Jean West just happened to be in Dallas to meet with Jack Ruby the night before the asssassination. Furthermore, if Jean West didn't take the call, who spoke on the phone for fifteen minutes, and why? A. What the evidence allows is that someone in the legal office office of Gill, Bernstein, Schreiber and Gill made a phone call to an apartment building in Chicago. We cannot say with certainty who made the call or who received it. It is possible that David Ferrie made the call, but it is also possible that someone else made it (see below.) It is possible that Aase received the call, but it is possible that she did not (and she denied doing so.) A call made on September 24, 1963 by an investigator for New Orleans Mafia leader Carlos Marcello to a woman in Chicago, who was present with Ruby on the night before the assassination. The committee found that David W. Ferrie had called the number of Jean Aase West and had spoken for at least 15 minutes. On November 21, 1963, Miss West visited Ruby in Dallas, accompanied a mutual friend, Lawrence Meyers. Miss West and Meyers had drinks with Ruby shortly before midnight on November 212 at the Cabana Motel. (4 HSCA 499) McAdams' answer to the phone call that seems to indicate a Ferrie-Ruby link is a curious article on his web site by a lone-gunman theorist named Dave Reitzes, entitled "Phone Factoid: Tortured Connection." Essentially, Reitzes argues, (1) that we really don't know with any confidence that it was Ferrie who placed the call to the building in which Jean West had a room, (2) that it's a coincidence that the call came from the office phone number from which Ferrie made other calls, and (3) that it's a coincidence that the call was made to the building where West was staying at the time. Reitzes notes that the number that was called was not the number to Jean West's room but rather to the building's main desk. And, Reitzes points out that Jean West reportedly denied receiving the call. I am trying to draw an abstract, unemotional, un-advocative distinction between what is proven and what is possible. It is NOT proven nor likely that Ferrie called Jean Aase. However, a phone call was made from a phone to which Ferrie had access to a building where Aase apparently lived at the time. It is not impossible that he called her, but it is FAR too strong an inference to draw on the available evidence. And as you know, we have to consider the context that Ferrie had no established connection with Ruby, Meyers or Aase, and that Aase denied receiving such a phone call. So it is unlikely that Ferrie made a call to her, but not impossible, given the circumstances.
