Telephone Preference Service ?

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. Telephone Preference Service - the telephone equivalent of the Mailing Preference Service - stopping unwanted and unsolicited sales calls etc... Has anyone been on this service long enough to know if it works? I saw it mentioned in the BT "Update" leaflet in my last Phone Bill - is it new or just not been advertised before?

A. All the local small fry aren't members, so I still average 1 junk call per day. The TPS people are very helpful and friendly though. Yes, for a couple of years. And no, it doesn't work. IIRC companies have to pay to get the list of names of those who don't want unsolicited calls, and I suspect most telephone marketing companies are either (a) too stupid to know that the Telephone Preference Service exists, or (b) prefer to risk 5p on a wasted call than pay for TPS subscriber info. This may not cover quite 100% of such companies, but it must be close, and certainly includes all the well known double-glazers. Can anyone think of a way to cause maximum annoyance to people who make those calls? I don't mean telling them to !?!? off but something like tell them yes you might be interested, but you've got a call waiting on the other line, and then never go back to them. If you want to cause them some annoyance then write to them in the Oftel approved form requiring them not to call you again. They are then obliged to keep a record of this and not call you again. This will put them to some trouble. If they do call again, and some do, you can then write to Oftel, who will in turn write to them in strong terms. As to the Telephone Preference Service, I can't see it being much use if they insist on charging people for the list of people who don't want to be called.
