phone number decoding/monitoring ?Q. Im interested in telephone monitoring equipment, to be used with scanners. Need to try and decode phone numbers, and monitor telephone calls. My current equipment only monitors analogue signals, any suggestions appreciated. This is for legitimate investigation work. A. At what point do you intend intercepting the calls? Between the 'phone and the handset? From a mobile 'phone mast? The latter isn't possible as the whole thing is multiplexed, digitised and then encrypted. Some analogue 'phones can be intercepted between the handset and base unit, but they're becoming a bit scarce as people move to DECT (?) which are supposed to be secure against casual listening. The ones with frequencies between 31.0375 and 31.2125 Base and 39.9375 to 40.1125 MHz Handset use NBFM (narrow FM) with no privacy equipment. There's no such thing as a scanner which can make sense of digitised telephone calls. suggestion number one... forget it. equipment currently available for domestic use will only monitor analogue traffic. Common sense dictates theres no point in encrypting voice calls if people can just go out and buy a cheapish set that decodes it all. There is nothing "legitimate" in what you're trying to do. Intelligence and police forces have to get authorisation to do it and even then informatin gained in this way may not be submissible as evidence. We ordinary folk arent even s'posed to listen in and it is against the law to use or act on information gained by "eavesdropping". All very well, but there must be something shady about wanting to do that. Well, if you bought them in the hope of monitoring digital telephone calls, you've wasted a hell of a lot of money. I doubt you would be able to decode it. I'm fairly certain this came up on this group recently, but it was concluded that the available software just wasn't up to it. I'd forget it if I were you. Most 'phones are digitised and/or encrypted nowadays. GCHQ can monitor your mobiles and the equipment the spy shops sell is what they are likely to use,but the equipment is only sold to certain people,ie law enforcement/government bodies, but i guess that includes embassies. as said very pricey, but it must work, otherwise the shops selling them would find all sorts of funny things happening to them. i would not like to upset some embassy with equioment like that, that could not do the job,you might end up dissapearing one night. not a field i am interested in,i can ask more questions next time i go in Lorraine electonics or one of the others, but the best thing is phone them up and ask questions. most are friendly, but for the hobbyist or private eye, then mobile phones are still a no go area.
