Compare VOIP PBX to classical PBX ?Q. Does it take less time to configure/install a classical PBX compared to a Voip PBX like the Cisco CallManager? A. A classical PBX is fairly stable in performance, configuration, and reliability. I'm constantly updating and working on the Cisco CallManager servers. Seems like every software fix adds a few new "undocumented features". Are you using a centralized Call Manager or a distributed model? Is the Call Manager trunked to a TDM PBX and if so, what kind of PBX? What version of Call Manager are you currently running? What kind of issues have you encountered with the software upgrades? Are you also running any other Cisco products such as Unity, IP-IVR, IP-CC, Personal Assist, etc.? If you're not using Unity, which voicemail platform are you running? How often does the system go down, or need to be restarted? What part of the country do you work in? Any possibility you'd be willing to show off you're Call Manager if we're in the same area? Although you did not asked me about my experience with the CallManager I can share this. I work for a system integrator in Europe and I have done now several CallManager installations. You will say I am not independent, but I can assure you I always try to be realistic. I have asked the question in this group because our sales people think we spend to much time on a CallManager implementation compared to classical PBX-ses. upgrade a 3.1 to 3.2 because of several issues. If you upgrade a CallManger with a mirror, before the upgrade you break the mirror (by pulling out one disk). When something goes wrong you can always reboot from your previous version. If you have a cluster ( I recommend this) there is almost no downtime during upgrades. We had sometimes strange issues, but they always came up immediately, so we could go back. My issue is all the time it takes. Every few weeks you can upgrade something (from the load of your phones, the CallManager or Windows 2000 security patches) If you take a look at the Cisco Site in the release notes, you can find all deltails of problems someone had before (but there are also others we cannot see). The list is very long, and somthimes you must think, does the CallManager works? My expeirence is: you can allways use the phone to dial. I never have installed new versions from the moment Cisco has published them, wait a few weeks until they release a Service patch for this version and read the release notes of the SP. If the list of resolved cavats is not to long, you may concider to upgrade.
Other Questions: I don't understand why my phone system does what it does. Whenever I have a power outage, I also lose all of my phones - dial tone and all.
