"Ericsson may exit the cell phone business" ?Q. In an article in the Wall Street Journal today, about the struggling mobile phone makers, it was reported that if Ericsson cannot return to profitability in the cell phone business in twelve months, they "may exit the business". A. Interesting - just looked up that article. If Ericsson continued its turnaround (which has been quite good in the last three quarters), they will be fine. A year ago, it looked like Ericssonw as slumping badly, and Nokia was crushing them. Even though the tides have not reversed, Ericsson, at least overseas, is bringing stuff to market much better, and has announced (hehe) cutting edge products no other manufacturer has. This means nothing until we see product in mass, but it's a good sign. Nokia has recently slid a bit on news of their last quarter, in part due to laste product introductions and time to market issues. We'll see what happens.... I hope Ericsson gets it right this time, but they are a distant third behind Nokia and Motorola with Samsung becoming a factor. I really like their new phones. I'm using a T28 World now and will upgrade to the T36 when it comes out. Well, in my opinion they have a very strong product line-up right now. The R320 is the WAP/Business phone of choice, The R310 is out, and so is the A2618. Two tri-banders are in line, one with GPRS. In the business/high end segment, it's looking good. However, I'm sure Nokia will continue to dominate especially in the low-end segment, pre-paid & teenagers generate lot's of volume for cheaper phones. Motorola isn't considered on par with the others as far as GSM goes, still struggling with bad quality, massive repair percentage, cryptic menues. And, the ultimate brain-loss, the V series where You can't see the display without opening the phone....... IMHO the problem for the phone branch of Ericsson is that they haven't been able to sell the simpler models like the Nokia 5110 and 3210. When it comes to more advanced telephones I don't think any company could match them. It would be silly of Ericsson to stop designing mobile phones, since it has a value for developing the systems and as a brand. In fact they already decided to "sell" the phone manufacturing (of simpler models) to sub-contractors... Well, that's MHO if anyone's interested...
