SOHO PBX ?Q. I'd like to build a personal PBX connecting 4 or 5 analogic phones with a ADSL line and I'd like to know what is the right card I need I visited digium site and I think TDM400 could be the right choice but I cannot understand how it works...I think it has 4 slots where 4 modules (FXS or FXO) can be inserted. How many cards do I need to connect my ADSL line to 5 phones? I think I need two cards, one with 1 FXS for the ADSL line and 3 FXO for the phones and the second card with only 2 FXO modules, is this correct? Where can I find the drivers for this card? Should I re-compile linux kernel or there is another way to add drivers to linux? A. The Digium cards are (pretty much) designed to work the Asterisk, the open source PBX software. You will need one FXS port for every unique extension you wish to address. FXO ports are for connecting your PBX to analog telephone lines provided by your phone company. 1) Can I use residential POTS as the CO lines for a PBX/KSU of this class? I gather res. POTS are loop-start lines, and some switches accept these, but as provisioned for res. services? 2) Could I just split the BRI and feed the P75 (or other TA) analog ports directly to the switch? If the TA is set up for it, will the switch understand the residential CallerID? (Assuming it has the necessary modules/cards) 3) I'd like to go (eventually 2 x) BRI direct to the switch. I know Siemens OfficePoint and Nortel ICS will do this, and I've heard Merlin Legend will. Can anyone confirm Legend, or suggest any others? I think Siemens and Nortel will be out of my price range, unless they can use 3rd party voice mail. I'd be installing myself. I've been the site admin for small (less than 50 stations) Winstar, NEC NEAX, and Definity ProLogix systems in the past. I believe I can get by so long as I can obtain the relevant manuals. Wiring home runs is preferred, not a problem. A Panasonic KXTD624 with a KXTVS50 is very suitable for the type of installation you are inquiring about. The KSU will accept any type of loop start line, either from the Pipe or the telco POTS line. The Panasonic KXT series is well liked for SOHO use and there are lots of people in this newsgroup who install and support them. The KXT mailing list is also an excellent resource. POTS with caller ID will work and display on Panasonic KXT series digital display phones if the KSU has callerid modules equipped. ISDN BRI via P75 POTS ports will work. P75 will not send analog caller id info to KSU. There are a few ISDN routers, such as certain models by Zyxel, that will send caller id out on POTS ports. Panasonic introduced BRI modules for certain of their small KXT KSU's a while back. They have not been wildly popular. Offhand, I don't know which KSU models will accept their BRI modules. I know there are others in this newsgroup who may know. Many installers seem to just use good ISDN TA's with good results. I can reccommend using Zyxel routers for this purpose, they've been designed for excellent ISDN POTS operation by the factory with the help of someone who frequents this newsgroup...
