Buying a new telephone system for a small office ?Q. Have you ever tried to check for "Business Telephone Systems" in Akihabara? Unless I have missed a very specialized outlet in the area, don't waste your time... A. I had very good luck with a several different Toshiba office phone systems, at offices here in the US. Surely their Japanese products are different, but probably not much different. Its worth checking them out. Maybe so, but I won't take the risk since I know people who have brought some items from the USA which can't be used here. I am not enough of a telecom technician to handle everything myself. The Toshiba service people won't touch anything that has not been purchased here. I am sure that there is a label attached that says "Only for use in the USA". Toshiba was notorious in not repairing laptops that were ordered via mail order from the USA. Nowadays they do it since you can buy English Toshiba laptops from Toshiba Direct. I'm not suggesting that you import a Toshiba system from the US, I'm suggesting you check out local Toshiba dealers and see what they offer in Japan. I'm sure the phones will be identical no matter where you buy them, but the controllers (stuff in the "phone closet") will be customized to meet local standards. I just got my US-purchased Toshiba laptop back from the nice folks at Toshiba in Akihabara. Repair work done in two days. Service with a smile. Only a year old and it has had the keyboard replaced twice. First time either my kids or my nephew spilled something on it and short out the keyboard. Toshiba repaired it under warranty. This time it was my kid who splashed water on it. now it might be 5,000 to 10,000. And once the call units of cellular phones have reached the same level as for the NTT 72,000 Yen units, we might have to buy for the garbage disposal! Does anybody know whether there were lawsuits by business or private owners, or has the government (then the factual owner of NTT) introduced a law that blocks such actions? I was told that this was "key money" which would be reimbursed through designated brokers who have pocketed over 20,000 Yen for each returned phone. If you want a new stationary phone line from NTT, the company will still sell it to you for this outrageous price.
