High School Student interested in Electrical/Computer EngineeringEdwards Finance > Computer Engineering Q. At the moment, I'm a Junior in High School, and my senior year is approaching rather quickly. I've always had a strong interest in electronics and computers, and I'm pretty much made my mind up that in college i'm going to major in computer or electical engineering (maybe both?). For the past two summers I've worked at a local electronics shop as a technician which specializes in the repair of DAT and pro-audio equipment; this summer I am working at a local electrical contractor for which I have done special projects in the past (I built and designed phone line testers). In school I get decent grades, and Ii keep involved. I love to act, and I'm the president of Stage Crew, and the Video Club. I'm the kid that people always call when something breaks. My claim to fame is that I actually designed and built a new Television Studio at my high-school, after the old studio had stopped being used after a some years, and turned into a closet. :) Ok, enough bragging about me, and let me get to my point: My Junior year is coming to an end, and this summer is the time for me to narrow down my college search. I have no idea where i want to go. I am writing in hopes that you guys: could give me some advice on which colleges are good, and aren't for an EE major; brag about your alma maters and persuade me to go there... etc. I live outside Philadelphia, and I think I want to stay in the Northeast, but hey, i'm young, you can persuade me. A. -I hear MIT somewhere in there. On the other hand, if dollars get important, tuition at Canadian Universities is less than the US, and at the moment, the US dollar is enjoying a large "surplus". Last week, for a trip to Virginia, I paid $160.00 Canadian dollars to get $100.00 US dollars. I guess the reciprocal of that would work out to somewhere around $65.00 US dollars will get you $100.00 Canadian dollars. While there, I paid $6.50 US for a Big Mac and etc, that I would have paid only $6.00 Cdn here. ie- some cost of living is less. On almost everything you buy (but not tuition) Ontario has a 15% combined sales tax. I have no idea if PA has any such tax. And towards your goals, as a world renowned "computer sciences" school, there is no better place than the University of Waterloo. Also, their engineering program is excellent. U of W is located in Waterloo, Ontario, about 100 miles, or 1.5 to 2 hours drive, due west of Niagara Falls or Buffalo, NY. ( Might be called Kitchener-Waterloo on a map). -I have opinions on schools for EEs: 1. In the southeast USA - these are all good: Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, NC State, and Clemson. I went to Clemson. I have a good career now as an electrical engineer. Honestly, Georgia Tech is perceived as the best of these four. Avoid Duke (sorry Duke grads, feel free to counter). 2. Purdue, like someone said, has a great reputation. So does Carnegie Mellon which is like MIT in terms of $tuition and SATs. 3. Stanford, say no more. but $$$$$ 4. Make very sure that you go to a college that is accredited by the AACSB (American something or other). If it's not, they are not up to snuff, because everyone strives to be accredited by them. Colleges that cut back on profs, classes, labs, they get their accreditation taken away. Sometimes they get accreditation from some other small group - don't accept those unless you know what you are doing. Good luck - you are embarking on an exciting career!
Other Questions: Computer VS Electrical Engineering?? Can anybody please tell me the difference between these two engineering fields? Starting next semester, I'll have to choose which field to enroll in. I would like to know what kind of stuff I'll be learning in these two fields. Also If you ...
