New satellite phone service in Japan ?Q. I've been seeing here and there an advertisement for some satellite phone service in Japan. The name of the company always slips me-- Iri???? or something like that. Anybody hear about this? Good, bad, ugly? A. It is "Iridium", which is named from the 77th element because their first plan was made with 77 satellites, according to http://www.iridium.co.jp/top/main.html $50 for base fee and unit charge seems to depend on zone, roughly about $5 per min. (sigh...) Iridium. It's the best damn phone system in the World. Buy it! Buy two! They also make great gifts. Disclaimer: I do work for the company behind this system. Iridium is a world wide comunication system. The phones are fairly high tech. If the cannot connect to a local base station ( like you're in the middle of the Sahara) they will connect to one of IIRC 54 low orbit satellites. I'm not sure of the pricing, but I would guess It's gonna be a fair amount higher than a regular cell phone. At least in the begining. DDI is and Iridium partner. You could contact their sales department and prolly get more info. Interesting. And I'm guessing that Iridium will have to set up all new 'local base stations' around the world? Or just in Japan? If it is the latter case, I'm guessing you'll be connect to one of those satellites whenever you go outside of Japan. Very interesting, and I've seen the pricing--a bit to high for my budget--and the size of the phone are a tad bit large. But, just like keitais, I'm sure they'll come down in size and price in a year or two.
