Q. credit counseling- any Debt Settlement Letter ? Stay away from credit counseling. It really hurt my friend. Those non-profits are a total misnomer. My friend was in a credit counseling program and switched to debt settlement and found it to be much better. i think the name of the company was debt settlement usa. i looked them all up on the BBB and this was one of the few who had a clean record. WHat was taking credit counseling 5 years to do, he did in 3 years.
A. I have wondered about them too. Also, I have a friend who recieved letters from the credit card companies.. or collection companies offering to settle the full debt by paying a reduced amount. For example the debt might be 2000 and they would offer to settle for 1000. That same letter would saying that information collected can be used... blah blah blah.. I have wondered if this settlement letter is just a trick to have the person contact them or to have them give them 1000 dollars.. and still try and collect the rest anyway.
