Advice about Debt Collection Letter ?Edwards Finance > Debt Recovery Q. I recentley received a letter from a debt recovery agency sent to a former friend of mine at my home address. The letter requested repayment of a loan taken out by this individual at my address to a sum approaching £4, 000 from the local council. This person had no permission to use my address for any such transaction and has never been resident here. I wrote to the collection agency and the local council explaining this, and gave all know addresses I have for this person. The agency claimed a security check "must have been carried out" but obviously this wasn't done adequetly, as a simple check would have revelaed the debtor not to be resident here. The council ackowledged my letter, but offered no real sign of concern - merely reffering me back to the debt collection agency, and not explaining why they didn't carry out a thorough security check. Obviously I am concerened about this, but do I have any real reason to worry over a debt I have no part in? A. Write to them (the debt collection agency) again refering to your previous corrspondence. Point out this loan is nothing to do with you, and you will not pay it. Further more point out they can't make you pay it. Threats, for example of legal action against you, may be a criminal offence under the administration of justice act 1970. Further more, point out that apart from one letter from them acknowledging your letter will lead to you charging for any replies. It's not your problem. It is theirs. In any case even if your friend was living there at the time, it is still his debt, not yours. So there is nothing to worry about.
