Refinance VehicleQ. I know I can't be the only one in this situation. My company has transferred me to Vancouver temporarily, but this could last up to 3 years. According to BC law you have to register your vehicle in 30 days. Well I'm in a very nasty catch 22. Has anybody experienced this and lived to talk about it? My lease company is on my title and is not a legal entity in British Columbia. Plus when I called them they were like oh you have to refinance, but even if I refinance the bank says I can't take the vehicle to canada (which is contrary to what they told be before, but whatever) My insurance company has bascially said I'm covered only if I'm visiting canada, and not more than 30 days. So basically I'll have no coverage if I stay in canada for more than 30 days. I do have a legal residence in the states as well. Is there any way to buy private insurance to be atleast covered by BC minimums? OR does anyone have any other suggestions on how to get out of this? I thought about transferring my lease but I'd laugh if anyone would loan me money. Legally I'm allowed to work in country for 6 months (unless I renew) so obviously I'm not staying. So getting a new loan or lease will be difficult I would imagine. I can't sell the vehicle in Canada and to sell it in the states wouldn't be worth it because I'm still upside down on my lease. Anybody got any thoughts on how to deal with this situation? A. You have legal residence in the US and are visiting Canada as long as you don't establish residence. Things get more complicated if you stay longer than 6 months. I would presume you are still being paid in the US. In which case, you are just a visitor to Canada, and do not have to register your car in Canada, nor insure it here. There should be no problem with taking the car into Canada for visits from your lessee. The problem only comes if you move to Canada. You should be able to convince your insurer to provide you with extended coverage to take your car to Canada for up to 6 months as a visitor, since the car is still going to be registered in CA at your home. I think you managed to over complicate this by assuming you were becoming resident in Canada.
