DSL without phone service?

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. I'm sick of paying all this money to Qwest for 2 phone lines, especially when they keep going down like they did again today. I'm thinking about junking the home phone service and just going with the cellular for voice, and going with DSL for the computer. Do you have to have home phone service to have DSL? What's a good company to use?

A. DSL uses the same phone line that you are now using for voice or modem. The trick is that it can be used for voice and computer work at the same time. Thus if DSL is available, you can drop the second phone line. No matter who you get DSL service from, the lines still come from Qwest. You will go down when the snow drops a tree branch onto the overhead lines, or some idiot with a backhoe cuts the trunk line. Yes, but can I have DSL without ANY phone line, and no bill at all from Qwest? Dropping the second line will trim like 15 dollars from my local phone bill, but I'd like to get rid of it altogether and just use the cell phone for voice. My service is constantly going out, unrelated to weather conditions. Something about the line getting stuck at the switching station. They keep sending somebody out, even though it just needs to be fixed at the switching station. Happens every month or so, and getting real tiresome. I think if I had DSL, I would just use that for the computer, and use cellular for all phone calls. I suspect you can't get a DSL-only line. And even if you could, Qwest would still charge you for the DSL usage of the line, even if there was no phone service. They're more or less renting you the wires that your phone or DSL box connects to, so they get a cut either way. You can in fact get DSL only service from QWEST or other access providers and ISP's. Companies like Covad, Northpoint, and others, in conjunction with an ISP like Viawest, Earthlink, and others, can set you up. Prices may be higher, depending on your needs. Your DSL circuit will terminate at a different location in the Central Office, so it's possible by moving to another provider, you will "solve" your problem... I had Qwest DSL for 4-months... not happy. Signed up for AT&T Broadband @Home cable internet... much faster internet speed.... better customer service. Already dropped the 2nd phone line. AT&T is offering digital telephone service over cable and you can keep your EXISTING telephone number. Drop Qwest ENTIRELY in February and use AT&T as my local and long-distance telephone company as well as my Broadband internet company..... AND its cheaper.
