Cellular Phone Service or PrePaid Service ?Q. I'm planning on getting a cell phone this week, but I'm not sure which service to get. Also, I "may" not be able to get service because either I don't have any or it's not any good and I'm talking about my credit. And in case of that, can anybody tell me what prepaid phone service I should get? A. I like the ATT prepaid service because you have voicemail, caller ID, call waiting, conference call and you can buy minutes as low as $25 (have to be recharged within 45 days) but all minutes come with FREE nationwide long distance. The local calling areas are pretty large, too. You can reach them at 1-800-361-1265 for information - 24 hours a day. If you think you will average more than two minutes per day (60 minutes in a month) a service plan will be less expensive. Prepaid is good if you use is limited. You must determine what carriers are in your area. AT&T would be a good choice for starting with a prepaid plan, about $100 for a package which would include the phone (Nokia 5165), perhaps a rebate, and an airtime card. Keeping your AT&T account active requires adding a $25 airtime card every 45 days, so your monthly cost is a minimum of $16.67. You could later switch to eCallPlus (www.ecallplus.com) with your Nokia 5165, start up with a $49 starter kit which includes $35 airtime, and from then on increment your account with $20 every 90 days for a monthly cost of $6.67. eCallPlus is a good plan if you don't use a lot of minutes. If you are 100% certain that you will only be using the phone for a limited number of minutes per month, look at http://www.tracfone.com - they do not require a credit check, or even a real name/address. They now have free voice mail, free caller id, and free call waiting on the digital phones. Note that your per-minute cost will range from $.28/minute up to $.80/minute. And double the amount if you are roaming.
