I'm looking for a multi-line (2-4) line telephone that is capable of Intercom, Paging, Handsfree, Conference, and Transfer functions. I'm curious if anyone is familiar with this phone and can comment on its performance. Its made by Thompson Consumer Electronics and is the model 2-9451-A. I don't understand how, absent a switch, it can distinguish between diffe...

Setting Up Brother MFC 4550 w/2-line system?
We recently moved and I'm trying to set this machine up and it's driving me bonkers. I have two lines coming into my house, and most all the outlets are of the 4-wire type that can handle two lines. I have a AT&T 2-line phone with a digital answering machine built-in up in the kitchen. In my home office, I have a 2-line Sony phone. I would like to have the fax dedicated to line two, but I would also like to use line two as a home biz line. My understanding is that you can rout...

3com Sportster technical question ?
I am using two 3Com Sportster 56K, ISA modems, Manufacturing Part Number: 005687-53 (the -53 is a Canadian version of the -03, supposedly it is functionally identical - that's what 3com says, anyway). My problem is when I call another 3com Sportster modem attached to a PBX Analog line. Whenever I call the modem from my modem, I get the following situation:My side: I get constant ringing until the operator/voice mail picks up Their side: After the 3 rings, it picks up, and tries to...

I don't understand why my phone system does what it does.
Whenever I have a power outage, I also lose all of my phones - dial tone and all. If some calls me, a recording says all circuits are busy - which of course they are not. This has been happening for over a year now - during which time we have had several outages. This loss of phones is for all my phones, some of which are cordless, and two of which are corded. When power is restored, sure enough, phone service becomes restored some 30 or so minutes later. My immediate neighb...

I am building a new chiropractic office. The building will be 4224 sq. ft., of which I will occupy 2112 sq. ft.. I need a minimum of three phone lines. Three lines that trunk over, the last of which will be used with an analog fax and SBC dsl. Wiring 4 line phone ?
I have a Comdial 3 line phone system in my small office. I recently bought a 4 line phone from Officemax. When I plug the cable from my Comdial phone into this new 4 line phone it will not work. When I pulled the cover off the phone jack I see that there are only 4 total wires connected to the jack that allow the use of 3 phone lines and the intercom. Is there a way to rewire this jack so the new 4 line phone would work throught the Comdial system? Currently I just wired it directly ...

Phone system for 2 person, 3 line home office
I am looking for recommendations for a 2, 3 or 4 line phone system for a small (3 extensions, 3 lines as in 1 residential, 1 "modem" and 1 business line) home office, with speakerphone, intercom, paging and transfer (to another extension) features, that also will interoperate with plain old phones and modems. By interoperate I mean that the line-in-use indicators will light up if someone picks up a regular telephone on a line, and the phone won't auto select that line for dial out...

2 line cordless 5.8GHz Telephone?
Why is it I have not seen one of these on the market yet? Does anyone know of a multi-handset 5.8GHz cordless phone system that can handle at least 2 phone lines? We need this for our home/small business. We currently use the Panasonic KX-TG2000 but we need to move to 5.8GHz to avoid the wireless networking.I don't know and have wondered that myself. What we are doing here at SELLCOM is using the TMC ET4000 phones and a couple of their ECA modules to add 2 Motorola 5.8GHz cordle...

Cordless phone - Airport inteference?
In my continuing saga of tryihg to tweak my Airport network I have a couple of more questions. 1.Is Airport Extreme better in a network which includes mostly 802.11b devices? I only have one 802.11g device (my new iBook). 2. I need some now cordless phones. I now use a 900Mhz phone, so no inteference now, but the 2.4 and 5.8uGhz phones offere more of the features I really want/need in a new phone system. Question in a predominately 802.11b network, would a 5.8Ghz phone syst...

Alcatel PBX ?
Does anybody know if I can get an alcatel system to generate dtmf tones internally? When dialling an external line you dial 69 and it will then send tones. However, that doesn't work internally. Any suggestions? There should be a feature code which may need to be entered before or after dialling. On the A4400 system, the default code is "#4". Which system are you using? After dialling the number, #4 is the default for passing DTMF to an external line, I'm not certain you can ge...

Modem on PBX Phone System Help?
I am attempting to use the modem in our pc in the office. I believe our phone system is called a PBX system and I am not sure what kind of adapter we need to use, if any. The phones themselves have 5 lines that you can choose from by pressing the corresponding button. One phone line goes into the phone. 1. Please advise on what kind of hardware is needed to use the modem on this kind of phone setup. 2. Do we disconnect the phone line from the phone and plug it direc...

extending analog pbx port ?
I'd like to extend an analog pbx station port from the office to my home. It should work like an off prem extension, that is when I go off hook at home, I should get pbx dial tone... when someone calls the extension, my analog phone at home should ring . I know there are a lot of boxes out there that do this, but they are hundreds if not thousands of bucks... I'm wondering if there's an inexpensive solution (as I'm paying for this on my own). You can try a pair of Sipura SPA-3000's....

Opinion on NEC Phone Systems ?
I just got a quote back from a vendor , with really good pricing a new NEC phone system. I have two options which is keep our Norstar system and just upgrade or get a new NEC phone system for the same price. The main difference on the features is that the NEC will support *whisper page* out of the box. What's your opinion on the NEC PBX systems? This is for their IPK handset. My current system is a Norstar System. What is whisper page exactly? Is it the same as voicecall on ...

Asterik - Anybody Use?
I`ve been looking at Asterix and just wondered if anybody else had tryed this? It looks quite cool but just wanted some feedback on its reliability? Also if I have a MultiTech card modem with 8 ports could I use this for my incoming lines or do i need a special card of some sort?I have installed it in our office and integrated it with our Norstar MCIS PBX. It is working great. I have 2 T1 cards. One is connected to the carrier and the other the MCIS. I have just set up a tes...

VOIP/IP based phone systems?
We currently use Voice Over IP pretty heavily in our office and are in need of a phone system. We could go with a traditional phone system and just plug our VOIP lines into it I guess??I have been thinking a lot lately about looking into some sort of IP based phone system like http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/phones/ps379/ Not sure this does anything more than use WiFi technology to replace the connection between base unit and handset, I will need to research more. I think ...

Questions about VoIP and VoIP-PBX
I am working for a small company (about 15 employees). We take calls for sales and technical supports. We have an old PBX with minimal basic functions (transfer, hold, 3 person talk, etc.). Our president is considering changing our phone system into VoIP + VoIP PBX.Internet Protocol (IP) PBXs As Voice-Over-IP technologies improved, several vendors introduced IP PBX products that managed all communications over a business IP network. Because IP standards were still evolving, eac...

Asterisk PBX on Ethernet ?
I'm very interested in this discussion about asterisk pbx. I realized a little pbx with a TDM400P card and it worked well. Now I'd like to try another solution with more phones. Doug says I could use IP phones on ethernet....this seems interesting. I searched for internet but I didn't find a scheme about components needed and how to connect them. I think I need: - a digital line from my local telco for example a E1 ( I live in Europe). - a digium card supporting E1 line on a PB...

Small office setup/using analog lines w/ Asterisk ?
We recently tried installing Asterisk for a small office. We figured the safest way to go would be to buy from someone who sold equipment specifically for Asterisk and to use a consultant that they recommended. However ... it didn't turn out so great. Sound quality is terrible -- the echo is pretty bad, and there are popping noises, too. Callers say that people on the Asterisk end sound very faint, while people on the Asterisk end hear people maybe too loundly (might be related t...

How can Asterix PBX/IP be compared to vendors such as Avalla, Nortel?
How can Asterix PBX/IP be compared to vendors such as Avalla, Nortel, Cisco, etc? How big Asterix PBX/IP can really grow as to the number of users? voice quality? etc. There is virtually no limit to the number of users that can be supported via Asterisk. That said, Asterisk's scalability is, beyond a certain point, cumbersome. For organizations with the expertise to deal with these issues, this is a trivial matter, more than offset by the dramatic cost savings of this open-source solu...

What's a PBX? Do I need one?
what's a PBX? Do I need one? PBX - some kind of exchange right? Let's you transfer calls? If so... then... it would be really good to have one. I would really need it for my business.Strictly speaking a PBX was where the telephonist connected the call with a jack plug, and rang your telephone by cranking a magneto ;-) OK these days PBX and PABX mean much the same. You might think that a pabx for the home is overkill, Some of us posting here are using Asterisk (aka Trixbox) wh...

Which Sprint PDA phone is the best????
I've had most of the Sprint smartphones since day one - Qualcomm, Samsung, Treo 300, 600, and then the very first Treo 650 to be unloaded in my home town. On the business side of my life, I've had Blackberry and Motorola. My new 755p has taken a lot of hits because it's no great departure from its predecessors, but to me that's one of its attractions - it's just more of the same excellence. The day I opened the box I knew 99% of what was needed to operate it properly, and owned...

What's Up With Telephone Cards?
I used to buy telephone cards to use for long-distance calls within the USA. The cards were good for state-to-state calls or in-state cards. The only cards I can find now are for state-to-state calls only. If a person uses one of the state-to-state cards to make an in-state call, the cost is five times the rate of state-to-state calling. Did something change that doesn't allow the sale of cards good for in-state calls? I usually purchase cards AT&T cards at Wal-Mart. Does an...

AT&T broadband ?
I am having the Fixed wireless phone service by AT&T next week and have a few questions for anyone with the service. I am in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area and this service is new to us. 1. How is the reliability of this phone service and also of the high-speed internet service. The high speed is what is most exciting for me as I can only connect at 26000kpbs at home because of lousy land lines. 2. I fanyone does have the high speed internet service from this Fixed wireless system, w...

AT&T Operator-Handled Manual Non-Dial Countries
Here is the most recent information I have on those parts of the world which are still AT&T Operator-Handled manual non-customer-dial. AT&T states that all calls via AT&T from the US to these countries must be handled by the AT&T International Operator Center in Pittsburgh PA. A call would start off by dialing the 'local' AT&T operator as: 00 (if the line is presubscribed to AT&T) or the following additional access methods, if necessary ... 10(10)288-0('#'/0) 800-CALL-ATT, 80...

Virgin Galactic seems criminal at base level
A while back, Virgin Galactic travel agents were on KGO radio promoting their space tours. The short ride into space reservation was selling for $200,000. It just seems to me, at first glance, that the fuel spent on this industry is purely criminal. How are we, as individual habitants of this earth, expected to save fuel for future generations by being green when private companies such as Virgin Galactic and government agencies such as NASA are able to burn through fuel as fast a...

Automated Customer Service Systems ?
Some of you may not like the gist of the explanation of why companies use automated customer service and so on. But we felt that you should know what you are dealing with in these situations and how they work. The fact that the live operator is not available on a automated phone system is done by design. We can tell you this from first hand experience. We have consulted and managed enough projects for creating IVR programs. That is the industry term for an automated telephone sys...

TSC Automated Phone System Question ?
I submitted my k-1 application to the TSC in February and received the NOA on Feb 14. (which stated, like most of us, a processing time of 30-40 days) I've called several times to find out the status from the automated system. I keep getting the following message: "can't be found at this time" Is this the standard message when nothing has been reviewed? Should I start worrying? Anyone else hear any other types messages? This is the message that you get when they inputted your nu...

Phone Systems for Small Business ?
What brands of phone systems should I look for for a small business 5 employess max . Avaya and Panasonic ?It depend on your business size and what features you want. I always try to steer people to the more affordable multi-line systems. If you are a small business and have few employees and dont need any voicemail I'd go with a multiline phone system. I find a lot of people wasting their money on expensive phone systems and they end up never using the features you would use wh...

Avaya IP Office / Phone Manager integration with Internet Explorer ?
We've a small office VoIP phone network (about 10 machines) running the above software. Phone Manager automatically pops up a screen to show an incoming call, and I'd like to integrate this with our office database which is is browser based through Internet Explorer. The back end is a Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP solution, but I don't think that'll matter. What I'd ideally like is when an incoming call comes through, for Phone Manager to call Internet Explorer and pass it a URL...

Avaya IP Office 403 custom TAPI programming ?
I'm trying to develop a custom TAPI application which will work with IP Office, but experiencing some strange problems. I've installed Phone Manager iPro application (activated with valid licenses) and it's working OK - I can make and receive calls. But, when I try to do that from a custom application I' cant receive calls, not even a notification that call is incoming. Even stranger, when I run my custom application in then same time with Phone Manager, then I'm receiving notifi...

Help choosing small office phone system ?
We have a one man physicians office with a 20 year old NEC 6/16 phone system which is on its last legs. We want to replace with a new system incorporating voice mail, automated attendant etc. We don't need a system that is too complicated or confusing. We have 4 lines and 10 extensions. We have had presentations of various small office phone systems including NEC Aspire S, Avaya Partner ACS, Nortel Compact ICS , ESI-IVX56s, and Infinite Mach1. Anyone familiar with these syste...

Message Waiting LEDs - Avaya / Lucent Partner Systems ?
Does anyone know where I can get message waiting LEDs that will work with a regular analog phone attached to an Avaya Partner phone system? Does anyone have the technical specs on how the message waiting LEDs work with this system?Partner systems superimpose about 24vac over the voice pair to light message LED's on analog phones. The 206E's must be R3.1 or higher to light message LED's on analog phones. Lucent (now Avaya) made a small external Message Waiting indicator. It is a...

Media mode and call privilege question /Avaya PBX problems ?
I'm having problems making a simple TAPI call on an Avaya IP Office PBX. The application works fine with other PBXes and analog modems. I tested Microsoft Dialer on the Avaya switch and that works, so it's clearly something that I have misconfigured in my ActiveX control. I'm now thinking that it might be the media mode and perhaps call privilege settings, they are currently: Datamodem and Owner respectively. It might be that the Avaya PBX is not able to handle the Datamodem setting?...

Wal Mart Avaya phone system
Does anyone know any exploits for the Avaya pbx systems that seem to be very prevalent at Wal-Mart stores? Is it possible to remotely dial in to the pbx and then access the intercom so you can play your own music or make your own announcements if you wish? I know this is possible with some other pbx's. For you 2600 magazine subscribers out there, does anyone have the Autumn 1997 issue that has an article in it entitled, "Secrets of WalMart"? Is this the article I should be loo...

Three Month Wait for Basic Phone Service ?
Were the delays to merely "turning on" phone service with a new number to an existing house? Were the delays adding a second line to a house with one line? At the phone company -- why did the delays occur? Insufficient capacity at a CO to accomodate new subscribers? Insufficient manpower to do outside wire stringing? Bogdown in paperwork processing? When NY Telephone suffering serious problems in the 1970s, one cause was the increased "churning" from customer moves. In th...

Alternative to Bellsouth for business phone service?
Does anybody know if there is a company that provides local business phone service in Atlanta aside from Bellsouth? Did business phone service get deregulated and opened up to competition as well as residential?Media One (now called AT&T Broadband) offers phone service, but I don't recommend it based on it taking them 10 visits to get mine working correctly. But if you can put up with initial hassles, it's cheaper than Bellsouth. There are many phone cos in Atlanta. Most of ...

trouble with Bellsouth phone service ?
Has anyone else experienced a problem with their phone service with Bellsouth? My land line went dead at 5pm today, and after calling Bellsouth twice it may not be until Thursday until they get someone to come out and look at it. Thinking about dumping them all together and going strickly with cellphones. Will save me about $25 a month.Bellsouth? Fraudulent Bellsouth Request?
According to our records, the telephone number we have on file to bill your BellSouth Internet Service, is no longer a valid BellSouth telephone number. This may occur when you move to a new address, change your telephone number or you change your local telephone company. BellSouth Internet Service can only bill your account through a valid BellSouth telephone number or a valid American Express, MasterCard or VISA credit card. After selecting the Billing Method link, follow the pro...

Bell Telephone Company
Cingular (a independant company owned by SBC and BellSouth) bought AT&T Wireless, which at that point in time was an independent company spun off from AT&T (the long distance company left over by the Ma Bell breakup,) months before, and lost the right to use the AT&T name, which required spending millions on new signage and untold gallons of orange paint rebranding hundreds of AT&T stores as Cingular stores. Then SBC bought AT&T (the long distance company,) and started renaming...

Sprint have best data plan bar none?
I'm thinking of switching cell carriers and upgrading to smart phone that has email and Internet access It "appears" to me that for $15/month I can get unlimited data through spint whereas other carriers typically want $40/month for that. Is this correct? Am I reading their info correct? Does Sprint have best data plan bar none so far?Not having ever tried Sprint and not knowing what your criteria for "best" is, I can't say, but you are going about this the wrong way. Price...

Best Business Cell Phone, Made In China ?
"All of the cell phone makers are moving to China, and we have to follow our customers," explains Melvin W. Boldt, BMI's founder, chairman and CEO. Indeed, both of his company's two largest customers, whom Boldt declines to name, have in effect told BMI that if it wants to continue doing business with them, BMI, too, must be manufacturing in China. 'Best Business Climate'It's difficult to exaggerate the dynamism that surrounds the investments in production facilities that U.S. and ...

Best phone for Business???
Whats the best business phone in your opinion. I have nokia 6600 and 6230 (which I use for everything else but business). I am looking for something with the facilities of the 6600 ie. can hold several telephone numbers, fax numbers, email addresses, postal addresses etc, for each contact and a good diary. Sony Ericcssons I know dont hold addresses so they are out of the running. And I dont want to carry a "brick".I would suggest that the Nokia 6310i is the standard business phone...

Best Way to Answer a Business Phone?
Many companies today answer their phone with a long winded answer. As a customer, I find it annoying and distracting. Which do you think is best?In fact, it is management-babble, a sort of Orwellian Newspeak that comes out of the mouths of people who draft "mission statements" that consist mainly of superlative adjectives making claims that, on the face of them, are false. Managers that make people do this sort of thing should be shot. When I was a kid, we had a man from the t...

Who has the best cell phone service in Houston?
I am about to change cell phone services, and I thought a little input from others may help me find the best compnay for service in central Houston. I have a Nextel phone which overall has pretty good service except for some gaping holes in coverage in areas that I travel a lot (San Felipe between RO boulevard and the railroad tracks, 59 just inside the loop to name two). Repeated calls to the company have not led to repair of htese holes. A friend of mine has Sprint, but he d...

Best cell phone service for RVing?
I know many people go camping to get away from the phone, but we like to take our cell phone along so our family can reach us in case of an emergency. The problem is, our cell service seems to disappear the moment we leave an urban area. Even along the Interstates it is very spotty. This summer we were in Santa Fe and could get no service unless we were within 2-3 miles of the center of town. Anybody had experience with a service that is more reliable? I know I can't expect servi...

New office phone system, non ISDN solution?
We will shortly be moving to a new office. We've so far made use of a fairly bog-standard ISDN PBX solution. For a number of reasons, we'd like to use only analogue lines at our new location. The requirements are: 6 separate incoming numbers, ringing 6 different phones 3 concurrent phone calls (minimum) ability to hold/transfer between the phones 6 separate voicemail boxes If we can do this with a fully DECT solution, all the better. You *could* use Call Sign, but there aren't...

Best Home Phone System ?
I am almost ready to move into a house I have been remodeling for a few years! I need to install a key system. I have been comparing Nortel, Samsung, Panasonic, NEC and Toshiba. Of these systems it apperas that the Nortel, Samsung and Panasonic are the most user friendly with respect to programming. I will have approximately 1-3 Lines to start and about 7-8 Locations + a front Door Box to start. So I presume that I need a 8X16 system? The Panasonic equipment seems kind of chees...

small office phone system ?
We have a small office with 3 CO lines and 5 extensions. I really want a KSU-less system but have tried the ATT964 and Panasonic wireless KX-TG4000, both with undesirable results. I have pretty much convince myself that I need a KSU system and have narrowed down the search to the Panasonic 624 and 308. I have a few questions and hope someone can help me out. 1. Besides digital vs analog, what is the advantage of the 308 over 624. I am leaning towards the 624 for the bundled C...

VOIP System AU$9,500 ?
The mentioned system is a turn-key system. In today's environment most businesses will consider pricing as being a deciding factor A deciding factor. One of many. An established business with >knowledgeable IT staff would not see price as critical as support even for a >"turn-key system".I would have said "especially for a turnkey system". After all, the point of a turnkey system is that it is a black box as far as the customer is concerned. The customer _depends_ on vendor support...

Bluetooth headset and office phone
I would like to use my hbh 30 bluetooth headset with my office phone. Does anybody know if there is a bluetooth adaptor available on the market that can be connected to a standard office phone?Nearest thing I've seen is a Jabra BT200 Multi-adapter http://www.jabra.com/products/FreeSpeak_nonBluetooth.htm It has a 3 or 4 way 2.5mm jack for non-BT mobiles, not sure if it could be adapted for an office phone (I assume you mean with an RJ11 connector) I don't think you will find ...

Vonage broadband phone service ?
I dumped my Verizon land phone and got Vonage a year ago last January. It's one of the best things I've done computer wise. I use my regular phone, it sounds as good or better than Verison at half the cost. Voice mail, caller ID, forwarding...everything. All for about 27 bucks a month. Yes, that is the total price, with taxes and fees. But the really cool thing is that anywhere in the US or Canadaville (not that I'd need to call there) is a local call. I live in Oregon. If I...

Business By Phone Number, Roads, yet again ?
"A traffic jam" is a collision between free enterprise and socialism. Free enterprise produces automobiles faster than socialism can build roads and road capacity. Who thinks that with private roads there would 'possibly be toll booths every 2-3 miles', think about how many telephone bills you will get and how many times you will have to register your phone with a new provider the next time you take a cross-country trip with your cell phone. One and once. And that is a *very* new...

Modifying a wrong listing phone number
I am the licensor of many companies. I was adding their business information to the Business Listings in Google. One licensee gave me a phone number they WANTED, not had. I placed that number on the listing and would like to now have that listing removed. I had marked verify by letter, but this seems to confuse my Licensee when the letter comes. I've learned to keep control by placing my MAIN business number for each listing and hence can modify anything in the listing and ha...

Cell Phone Plans ?
I'm interested in purchasing a cell phone as my primary home phone and for use when I travel, as I always to due to the nature of my job. I need some advice on services, what to look for, etc. I don't want roaming fees, an expensive phone and plan, and I must have the ability to call anywhere from anywhere in America at anytime without being disconnected. Does Sprint have best data plan bar none so far?Not having ever tried Sprint and not knowing what your criteria for "best" is, I can't say, but you are going about this the wrong way. Price...

cell phones and driving ?
My view is one of the business professional using the phone for conducting business. I feel this falls under the broader umbrella of a cell phone etiquette issue, but that's a topic for another day. But lets just say cell phone etiquette needs to evolve. I have resisted giving out my cell phone number to customers, suppliers and various other people who I have a reason to talk to as I conduct my business. I'm not sure how typical this is but I believe I am probably in the min...

IP Phone Hot in China ?
Internet phone does not need use the traditional long distance telecom network. With the fear of heavy impact on China telecom long distance business, China Post & Telecom Bureau, the former administration bureau of China telecom, had been banning the business. However, with more open market, China Telecom was separated into 4 companies -- fixed line, mobile, paging and satellite. Besides China Telecom, Ministry of Information Industry had approved more companies to run telecom ...

US West, DSL, and long distance ?
I have DSL and my long distance service (AT&T) has again been switched to a business account. This has happened every month since June of this year. I have been way too patient (or lazy) in trying to solve this. US West says that I have residential DSL; you'll have to talk to AT&T. AT&T says we show you as having business local service; you'll have to talk with your local phone company. Has anyone with this problem been able to straighten it out? If so, how? This kind of nonsens...

Cellular phone for business ?
I wonder if you can deduct a cell-phone bought just for business travel as a business expense? I was once told by my accountant that if I had another phone installed (I have two now) that only one could be used as a business expense. (I thought maybe one for the internet was a business expense since I use the internet mostly for business purposes and another phone for just business calls and then my own private phone for everyone to use would, of course, not be a business expense. ...

Ventura to ASCII Document conversion?
I didn't order ANY advertising or listing in the "other" phone book. I went strictly with the "Real" Yellow Pages. The "other" phone book automatically listed me in its Yellow Pages. It will be interesting to see if they list me under the headings of "Resumes" and "Transcription" this next year, since I added them to the "Typing" ad last fall.If you have a business line in your house, does that affect your home phone? If not, I can see why you have a lot of business lines in your...

Looking for Inexpensive Small Business PBX Solution ?
I'm looking for a very inexpensive PBX or other type of solution that can accomodate a small home business. I know next to nothing about PBX's, so I will need some well explained details. I would be willing to sacrifice some features to keep the cost down. I need something that can perform the following: We have one business line with an 800 number. We want to maintain only one phone line for incoming and outgoing calls. Minimally we need 2 phones, with the ability to expand. Wou...

Ericsson may exit the cell phone business?
About the struggling mobile phone makers, it was reported that if Ericsson cannot return to profitability in the cell phone business in twelve months, they "may exit the business".They have a very strong product line-up right now. The R320 is the WAP/Business phone of choice, The R310 is out, and so is the A2618. Two tri-banders are in line, one with GPRS. In the business/high end segment, it's looking good. However, I'm sure Nokia will continue to dominate especially in the low-en...

Business Phone Calls... ?
I was wondering if a phone or mobile phone has to be in the company name in order to be able deduct business calls? If it's possible to deduct business calls made from a personal phone number, how should that be documented? In the "good old days" before itemised billing companies with a large number of employees raising expenses agreed with the IR that deduction of 25% for personal calls was acceptable. However, one company I worked at with this system failed to tell all in accounts an...

Most of ...

Is Nufone going out of business???
I ordered service over a month ago and have not gotten any info from them. They don't reply to my voice messages for several days (they don't answer their phones!) and reply to my email messages a week or so after I've sent them, if I'm lucky enough to get a reply at all. I tried reporting them to the Better Business Bureau but apparently they are not listed (for good reason). Does anyone know anything about their status? So far my Nufone experience has been a total nightma...

dinner/phone etiquette
My live-in girlfriend and I are having a disagreement about the use of the phone at the dinner table. Recently, her 14 yr old daughter was in the middle of a phone conversation with her grandmother (who lives 1600 miles away) when it was 'time' to start dinner. All three of us sat at the table and the daughter continued the phone conversation with her grandmother. The conversation ended shortly thereafter, but the circumstances have led to an interesting disagreement between my gir...

Best Way to Answer a Business Phone?
I've made it my policy that if I'm waiting in line to be served and the sales clerk thinks it's *more* important to take a telephone interruption than to serve me I'll put down my purchase and walk out of that store. Telephone customers do not have any more clout than customers who are in front of you. This is why the phone at my wife's chocolate shop has an answering machine that picks up after 2 rings and gives the hours and a chance to leave a message. I made it a point to instru...

Cheapest business phone line ?
I work from home as a computer programmer, and have a second phone line - in my limited company's name - which is used for work phone calls and ADSL broadband (the broadband is also in the company name). I need to have the second line in the company name in order for the cost to be deductable to the company. The problem is that I --make-- very few phone calls, so the cost of the phone line is basically the cost of the rental, and I'd like to reduce that if possible. Currently I'm...

How much for a business phone line?
I live in Jacksonville, Florida and I'm starting a home business. 1) However, I want to know how much does it cost to have another phone line in my house that I will only use for business use. 2) How much does it cost to have the ability to provide a toll free number for my customers to call?I don't know how much it costs in the US (I'm in Canada), but I would recommend you look into a service called Tagline. Think of Tagline as a "virtual" phone line. It's a toll-free phone...

Business Phone Numbers Appear first in Outlook 2002
Is there some way to change the way phone numbers are listed in Outlook 2002. If a contact has a home phone and a business phone, the business number always appears first. I would like the home phone number to appear first.Yes there is. Go to View-Current View-Customize Current View. Select the fields button. Phone numbers and more
Here is an interesting site, it is the US business phone book, I punched in three of our members who's number I didn't have and eureka. Sometimes it pays not to be too specific, a surname or initial does the job. Some other interesting stuff as well;-)) Like school friends. Nothing is secret in the US. http://adp.infousa.com/fs/consumer.htmWell, the good news is that I am not findable. And interestingly, I also see that many distant relatives still live in a town where they were p...

CD ROM bus. phone directories ?
I am in the process of purchasing a CD ROM business phone directory and would appreciate any input on the various CD's available. I have read about Select Phone and PhoneDisc but except for price, they seem very similar. I am only interested in the business listings so the residential capibilities are not that important. If you have experience with CD business directories your recommendations would be very helpful. I recommended a CD to a friend, who bought it and began to use...

Facebook tribute pages ?
I am speaking about business. What part of the employees safety did you not understand? Call waiting is necessary as managers are often on the road out side of the office environment. Yet they are required to be accessible for their employees' safety.Call waiting on a cell phone? Absolutely unnecessary, unless someone else is paying the bills; every time that you put someone on hold, and speak on the other line you're being charged *double* the time! It's almost as bad when yo...

Why not more attractive multi-phone plans?
one would think that there would be a niche for selling a plan to somebody who would pay a few bucks extra to have, say, three phones on one plan for the same monthly rate as one - but have a restricted number of "free" minutes. That way whoever holds those two extra phones (wife, children?) would be potential sales generators to the extent that they would tend to use them and the account would get charged for the minutes. Sounds logical to Yours Truly - but I'm guessing there i...

business looking to move phone providers ?
The business I work for has 80 staff. We have cable and wireless connections into the building for our telephone service. We think the service from cable and wireless is awful. We have problems with the connections and are looking to move back to alternative low cost routing.I can help you out here. FWD: Phone scam ?
This is scary to think that our kids are answering the phones. important, please read. This can happen at home and at work, everyone should be aware...I've sent this to all my friends last Friday night and I've already had 3 email me and say that it's already happened to them.Well, not at home (unless you have to dial 9 at home to get an outside line), and only some business phone systems are susceptible. This is one of those urban legends with a tiny grain of truth - see: "...

Why can't I search by phone number in Outlook 2003 contacts now?
How do I use Advanced Find to search for a specific number which I don't know if it is a business or home number? Can someone help step by step? Also, using advanced search to find all contacts using a specific "business phone number" yielded no results, when there are in fact two contacts (at least) in contacts. I had cut and pasted the business phone number from the business phone field and entered it into the appropriate "business phone number" field. However, in one of the tw...

Your own Business Marketing Local Phone Service ?
I have a business opportunity for you. I respect your time, so I am going to present the opportunity in a direct and straightforward manner. This opportunity involves starting your own business to market alternative local phone service. Due to Federal Deregulation, the customers in your area now have a choice of local phone service providers. They are no longer bound by location to a provider. The company that I represent is EXCEL-VarTec and they are now providing alternative local ph...

Business Phone Services. Make VoIP phone call from Outlook ?
I'm using RingCentral right now and it works great with Outlook contacts and so-so with BCM. I'm working with them to integrate it better... Cool service! On most laptops, you just need a headset (either cheap that plugs into the sound ports, or more expensive USB ones), and some VoIP software that links to a service. The service you select will determine which VoIP software is compatible and that will determine which set of contacts you can use. Almost all of them work with Outloo...

Looking for the best solutions for your business??
It IS his phone, and he IS allowed to answer it however he wants. I'm willing to bet a lot of people would be less than 100% gracious if you called them up and jumped on them for not answering the phone precisely the way YOU want them to. Just because someone is a businessman doesn't mean they need to roll over and beg on command. The proper greeting for a business phone is to identify both the business and the person speaking. Nobody was asking him to sit up and bark merely...

Business style\quality fixed corded phones ?
Can anyone recommend a good value site for business quality phones, coarded as might be used on a PBX. It is really for residential use but the ones in Argos aren't quite what i'm looking for and all the sites I have used seem to have gone. It is for my grandmother who needs a decent hearing aid compatible phone, I would like to look at the business ranges such as the BT Converse but other similar business phones as well."Accessible Products" then "Corded phones" will give you fo...

Business Phone System Pbx. Telephone system vendor source?

If there is a better newsgroup to ask this question on please let me know. There are bound to be a ton of telephone system suppliers in your area. Try the yellow pages. Local phone companies often sell business systems as well. I know the AT&T Partner/Partner II system supported analog phone devices, aka POTS (plain old t...

Seeking Advice For Small Business Phone System ?
My wife and her family are forming a new business and they have the need for a small business phone system and I told her I would try to do some research. They have the need for 4 phone lines on a rotary system, i.e. a call comes in and 3 more can come in until the phone number rings busy. They also need an intercom system built into the phone so the secretary can answer it, and then let each of them know they have a call on hold. Expandability would also be a good feature, i.e. the ...

Advice on Small Business Phone System ?
I have looked at Nortel CICS, but I don't think I can have the fax and digital answering machine on the system with out having an expensive analog card. I don't like the idea of a dedicated fax line. We are a small office and currently only have two lines that trunk with DSL and fax on the second line, so I would like to have the possibility of trunking over to that third line on the system. The no-longer-available Nortel 6x16 sounds like it will suit your current needs and are very ...

Business phone system - where to start?
Have you looked into Asterisk software? It is a PBX application running under Linux on an x86 system. It is freeware developed mainly by a company called Digium. Digium sells PC boards such as one to terminate a T-1, for example. It might be a very worthwhile, and much cheaper, alternative to other PBX systems mentioned in earlier replies. The other thing that I noticed is that a headset on my desktop Mac, connected directly to the network which has the DSL modem (I have a static ...

Business phone system - where to start?
Was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. Work for a company that has about 30 employees. We currently have a digital phone system (not sure which one) with voicemail and a single T1 line. We have an 800 number and get calls constantly throughout the day (sometimes all the lines are used up). I'm a network engineer (new to the company) but have no experience in phone systems and have been told "go find a new one". Apparently we've had all sorts problems w...

Business Phone System Uk. Phone Technician Scam ?
I got this in e-mail from a friend, who is passing it on to others, and I am sure received it the same way. Sounds like meat for this NG. Any thoughts? This (90#) was probably an internal function of some PABX, PBX, or Centrex-type system. The PABX where I work had a way to transfer an outside line to an external caller, but it was recently disabled (or at least I can't get to it). The UL itself (if it was a UL) is actually plausible, and there are similar scams documented. Sin...

Best phone for Business???
Can you explain how the camera presence affects the business aspects of 6600? It's just a useful add-on allowing to implement the perfect idea of personal contact images. In my humble opinion the business phone should comply with these requirements: 1. Has enough memory for storing 1000+ contacts. 2. Has advanced phonebook that can store several types of additional contact information. 3. Has no restriction about number of phones of specified type per contact. 4. Has advanced C...

Searching by phone number in address book ?
I use my phone in my home based business. I try to log the calls, but my phone bill shows those I forgot. To include them as a business expense, I'd like to search by phone number in my address book to verify who we called. That works (very quickly) on a one-by-one basis: enter a phone number, get the contact. If you'd rather have your whole address book sorted by phone number so you can just check the list for all of these numbers, you could get my Sort by Field script at the sam...

URGENT: Search by phone number?
Anyone know if there is a search engine that lets you look up a location by phone number(instead of the other way around). I have a phone number to what I know is a fax machine at what I think is a business. I need to know tonight.they contain name, phone number and address. The BUSINESS disk also contains a code for the category of the business. The BUSINESS disk can be searched by any of the fields, and the search can be limited to particular areas, and can be set to exclude ce...

Telephone etiquette ?
My old Audiovox cell "had" a nice missed call feature- it just had an led on top that blinked. The display held that number. One tick and I could dial the # back. Very useful for me, when I work the phone is somewhere it won't get destroyed. The Nokia has to be picked up and peered into as well. The reason why store clerks and car rental clerks will leave a customer at the counter waiting to answer the phone is because they are often receiving phone calls from other branches, as we...

difference between a residential telephone line and a business telephone line?
Its basically a result of the history. They were allowed to have the business line rent higher than the residential one, mainly as a subsidy to residential phone users, back in the days when they were a purely govt operation and the govt had a say on that sort of thing. Even when they got privatised and lost their monopoly, the govt of the day, Keating, imposed some pretty stringent controls on what they could do on charges, mainly for political reasons.there are still limits on th...

I believe the source has already been discloses as Graham & Whiteside Ltd. business directories - if you check some of his...

FCC Regulated Charges on Telephone Service ?
Are FCC regulated surcharges, which may be separately stated as a recurring monthly charge on a retail customer's telephone bill, subject to the Massachusetts sales and use tax on telecommunications services?Local telephone companies recover some of the costs of the actual lines connecting homes and businesses through a monthly charge appearing on the customer's telephone bill. This charge is usually called the "subscriber line charge," but also may be referred to as the "federal sub...

VoIP Based Telephone service for Small Business ?
We are a small business with 5 tel. lines, 1 SDSL connection. I was approached by a VoIP vendor regarding a VoIP based product that would cut our phone bills by 1/2. I haven't looked at it yet. IP Business Telephones ?
Is anyone out there using an IP business telephone? I have been looking at Mitel, Siemens, 3Com, Selsius, and Pingtel. Any comments on ease of use or problem areas? Also, being in a hardware world, if you know the chipsets used in any of these phones. We have been looking at the Cisco system. Business Telephone Systems ?
When a business has multiple telephone lines, how do they come into their office? Telephone systems for a small office, is it usual for a small business to buy a telephone switch exchange for their office, or is it more likely rented? What kind of prices get paid for these things, to buy or to rent?If a business has multiple telephone lines, it depends if they are analogue or digital. PSTN trunks-probably Fax routing (in and out)-?ACD (Automated Call Distribution)-probably A good system (sticking to ma...

2-line wireless phone system (4 phones) ?
Does anyone know if there is a way to process credit cards via a wireless phone? Besides the voice authorization feature.I have seen many cell based CC swipe devices at trade shows. They work just like the traditional type. Another method would probably be, although I haven't researched it, using a wireless web capable Palm type device or cell phone and a web based CC system such as www.propay.com. I believe many of the CC processors have a web based "virtual" terminal for processing c...

Customer Service Phone Number for amazon.com ?
I discovered that it's almost impossible to find the customer service phone number on the amazon.com web site. This is just absurd for a company of this size. I also discovered articles about this topic at pcworld and slate magazine web sites -- this behavior is universally detested. Many online places try to avoid having you call them. Did you look for a phone number for buy.com? Last I heard, there wasn't one (at one point I think they charged if you wanted to call). While I'm...

And it's not buy.com's prices are that incredibly low anymore anyway.I have had exactly the same problem with Buy.com And the response from the email is not heartening. Call Center Frustration ?
Even if the call center actually is in your area, and reps directly employed by the company you are doing business with, customer service reps have to meet their "stats" . Call center phone systems come with software to generate detailed reports, both on the call center as a whole and on individual reps."Service level" is calulcated from these and other stats. In call centers, stats are usually more important than the quality of service, unless complaints reach upper management and ...

Cell phone business ?
Im opening up a cell phone business & im just wondering how a typical day in a cell phone business would be like?I owned and operated a cellphone retail shop from 1997 to 2001. However, before opening my own, I worked in others first, to learn the business, and get a feel for customer expectations. I'm sure the business has changed radically in the eight years I've been out of it, but I can still give you one solid piece of advice: if you have no idea what "a typical day is like" ...

Today's Cell Phone Companies?
With all the mergers, could someone list today's major cell phone companies that provide their own service (not merely piggyback off someone else)?Comments on telephone service quality and customer service would be appreciated. (I do realize there are regional differences and some places may do much better than others.) I must admit my opinion of ALL cell phone carriers is that their first priority is to sell service and issues about providing service come in second. I presum...

Cell phone service ?
Well, my two-year contract with Cingular/AT&T finally ran up two weeks ago, and, naturally, my cell phone died today. I'm ready to move to another service. Anybody got T-Mobile? If so, how do you like it, and how is the coverage?I have T-mobile and it suits its purpose for me. The phone was free and I only pay $20 a month for a certain plan. I only really use it for emergencies and only have it turned on during long car rides, an hour or more. I have never been cut off. The sig...

Cell Phone Docking Station for Maxima ?
Does anyone have any information on a cell phone docking station from Nissan available for their cars that works with a Motorola Microtac cellular phone. I am interested in finding out the cost and how good this system is and where it can be bought.Last time I was in the parts department of my local Nissan Dealer I saw an ad on the wall for a docking station for a cell phone from Nissan but didn't really pay attention as to what kind of phone. Maybe call you local dealer and se...

Question About Cell Phone Equipment ?
Over the past couple years I've changed cell phone services and have accumulated a couple of cell phones. One is a digital Nokia about a year old. The other an older Motorola 3 watt. Question is are these useful for anything or worth anything? I can't believe it's the trash can for them, but when getting another service they give you another phone.Well the RF amplifier and stuff from the older Motorola might be useful.. Any idea what freauency-range it is in? I think you'll...

CHP study finds cell phone use risky business ?
the groundbreaking CHP review -- the first to compare the rate of California accidents caused by cell phone yakking with other risky driving habits -- has a state lawmaker saying cell phones are a big enough danger to justify legislation requiring drivers to use hands-free equipment. "At some point, common sense and daily observation ought to tell us there is a problem," said Assemblyman Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, who is making his third run at passing a bill requiring drivers ...

Cell Phone Jamming Equipment 4 sale! ?
Going to have to get one of those pocket models. Last two movies I went to there was some idiot with a cell phone ringing. But wait, what if the cellphone user is aware of the jamming and just blast out their ringtone anyway?, Or turn the volume up high and keys morse code messages using the keypad... How does the person with the cellphone jammer know for sure that the jammer is only jamming frequencies only used by cellphones? Any idiot that doesn't have sense enough to turn t...

Cell phones...in the office and in general ?
Living in Japan--the home of "every kid age 5 or over MUST have cell phone" gets a little too much. And now with those handsfree kits it looks like everybody is going around talking to themselves like psychotics!Recently, my co-worker was in line behind a woman who was having a lucid conversation with the air. Her garden, the kids, the weather, what have you. I wonder how many schizophrenics would go unnoticed if you popped a cell phone into their hands. I'm also one o...

Cell Phone Operating Systems?
The responses to you so far have hardly been encouraging. Why do we have to have YET ANOTHER operating system to cope with? I would think that you should think about bring MS Windows up to Linux standards. Of course, the MS Windows people think the opposite. Linux didn't become popular simply because MS Windows was inadequate.I have been following this somewhat amusing thread and as far as I can see it is progressing from the ridiculous to the absurd. I don't think any of the thre...

New Operating System ?
Anyone wanting to work on development of a new operating systemThis is a project which I have been dreaming up for the last year or so. I have not written any code, nor have I broken down this vast undertaking into manageable pieces yet. I have merely began my small, voluntary movement of coders and designers toward a new operating system which addresses the issue of popular distributions of Linux and windows. We all know that Windows is an inferior operating system. Linux is an exc...

New York To Crack Down On Cell Phones?
"While many Americans agree it is bad manners if your cell phone rings during a movie, a Broadway play or a concert, should it be against the law, with offenders paying a $50 fine for each infraction? Politicians in New York City think so, and have proposed a bill to outlaw such boorish behavior – much to the chagrin of the Libertarian Party."Actually there is a principle involved. It's a matter of private property. The theater owner is free to make such rules for entry as he ...

Cell phone booster ???
When we go to the (recently-aquired) cabin we are just on the edge of cell phone service. We can get a signal less than a mile from the cabin, in terrain that is heavily forested and has variances of elevation of no more than 50 feet vertical We really don't want to have permanent (line) phone service in the cabin, but it would be nice to have cell phone service just in case Someone suggested we get a cell phone booster for the car and/or cabinI live under the same condition. I h...

Cell Phone service plans.... ?
I was wondering if there are any good phone plans like where the monthly fee is around $10 - $15 or something. I need a phone or something like a text messenger that I can talk or type from one person to another for really cheap. I would rather have just a text messenger, but the all are like $15 that seems a bit high for text messenging.I don't use my cell that often. So I got T-mobile's prepaid plan. Fill up to $100 in prepaid minutes (1000 minutes), and you're set for one year...

Cell phone service providers lose 50 lakhs annually to defaulters ?
Every year the cell phone service providers get cheated to the tune of 50 lakhs. The number one cell phone service provider, as per the peoples opinion on citizenbharat.com, Airtel is supposed to have taken some stringent measures to curb the huge losses.Indians rake up huge credit on tea and snacks and never pay back to the poor tea stall owners too. Indians want everything free. They want free land, free bus, free trains, free movies, free everything. I'm about to change to...

Aren't you frustrated from your cell phone service providers???
I am writing to see how many of you are frustrated with your cell phone service providers by their outrageous terms, conditions, plan options and charges. Do you know most of the other countries cell phone service providers don't charge for incoming calls and incoming text messages unlike our cell phone providers. Let me know your thoughts and opinions.I go with prepaid, I pay "more per minute", but make so few calls it's much cheaper. I pay in $10/ mth to keep it active and it rolls...

Cell phone service and phones ?
I am getting ready to change cell providers and would like to hear your opinions about various services and phones. I currently have a Motorola V60i with AT&T and am not very happy with the service or the phone. I plan on switching to Verizon. I do not need a lot of gadgets, I primarily use the phone as a phone. I do use it for my business so the most important aspect is sound quality and good connections. The V60i has good sound quality but the damn antenna breaks off. AT&T...

Cell Phone Reviews? (Like Consumer Reports) ?
Does anyone know of a Consumer-Reports-sort of review that has been done on cellular phone equipment? I know C.R. has reviewed cell phone SERVICE, but not the equipment itself. I'm looking to spend a bundle on a tiny phone, and I'd like to get one that works exquisitely!I'm glad I'm not the only one who hated that fucking phone. The antennas on the V60i are very fragile, and I snapped off about a dozen of the damned things. The friendly folks at Verizon were very sympathetic and ...

Why does cell phone service cost more than wired?
Why does cell phone service cost MORE than landline service? I can get a basic no frills wired phone service for abt $15 a month. Now doesn't a wired phone require way more "infrastructure" in the form of wire and telephone polls and such? And isn't a wireless cell phone LESS infrastructure intensive in that you only need the towers and switching gear? I mean.... in third world countries they setup wireless service rather than wired service cause it is easier and less eq...

Cellular phone for business ?
I wonder if you can deduct a cell-phone bought just for business travel as a business expense? I was once told by my accountant that if I had another phone installed (I have two now) that only one could be used as a business expense. (I thought maybe one for the internet was a business expense since I use the internet mostly for business purposes and another phone for just business calls and then my own private phone for everyone to use would, of course, not be a business expense.We...

cell phones and driving ?
My view is one of the business professional using the phone for conducting business. I feel this falls under the broader umbrella of a cell phone etiquette issue, but that's a topic for another day. But lets just say cell phone etiquette needs to evolve.I have resisted giving out my cell phone number to customers, suppliers and various other people who I have a reason to talk to as I conduct my business. I'm not sure how typical this is but I believe I am probably in the minority...

Cell Phone Spy Equipment ?
Before Marshall (Kevin Weisman) hands any bit of high-tech gadgetry to his Sydney (Jennifer Garner) or any of the other SD-6 agents on "Alias," Chris Call and Chris Redmond have to build it. They're the prop masters on ABC's spy show, and they're responsible for anything that the actors pick up or use.Their work covers things as simple as a lipstick to intricate pieces like a centuries-old clock -- pretty much whatever the show's creator, J.J. Abrams, and writers can dream up for Sydne...

Cell phone calls recorded ?
Someone told me that they saw on a TV news show (60 Min, 20/20 or one like that) that ALL cell phone calls are being recorded and archived in a LARGE warehouse somewhere in the northeast, to be used to trace the calls to capture lawbreakers. Anyone ever hear about such a thing?I am certain that I have heard that the Patriot Act allows "them" to record cell phone calls and store them without a warrant. Not by a lawyer. Of course, anyone who would believe such a thing would pobably ...

cell phone receive only ??
Can I leave my cell phone on but not answer it in flight. My phone says who called so I can later call them back on the ground???? I HAVE been turning it off before flying. To be legal, no. Your cell phone transmits when the power is on. That's how it can tell you what the signal strength is, that's also how it rings in the first place. It knows where you are at all times the phone is on. I leave mine on all the time and use it in flight. I rarely fly above 1000-1500 AGL so I'v...

Cell phone tap ?
I have been informed that with some of the very sophisticated test equipment that is avaible, once a users EIN has been obtained, the cell phone can be turned on without lighting up the dial and a audible signal thus allowing the unit to be used as a listen deviseI would be very interested to know which manufacturers and models of cell phones allow the transmitter to be turned on remotely. I can see VERY little use for that feature besides that which you have described... Ther...

cell phone unlocking ?
Has anyone here unlocked (or gotten unlocked) a Sony Ericsson T637 or similar phone? I know I can buy the equipment online, but (a) I need this done soon and (b) I'd rather pay a fellow student or local business here than an online store someplace else."Two kinds of complaints can be filed under Section 255, formal and informal. The complaints are informal. The FCC notifies the companies against whom the complaints are filed and the companies are required to contact the consum...

Cell phone without service?
I remember reading a couple years back that if you had a cell phone without service, you could still make emergency calls for a high per-minute fee using something called "American Roamers" or some such. Can anyone direct me to a FAQ? I just picked up an old cellphone at a garage sale, and I don't think I want regular service....From what I understand, you should be able to make a 911 or 611 call from your phone. You should also be able to make calls using a credit card from your p...

NCL First To Offer Cell Phone Service! ?
I am totally befuddled by the venom that people display towards cell phone users. I don't like to see them used by a driver of a car, but I think that just arguing or even talking to a passenger is just as distracting to the driver and just as likely to lead to an accident. If the driver is conversing to someone in the car, you can't point and say - he's a bad driver because he's talking on the phone. Maybe he'd be just as bad without one. A friend of mine was in a bad acciden...

Why does cell phone service cost more than wired?
I really wanted another dedicated line for my computer, with no frills. What I found out was that it would cost almost $40 a month, with NONE of the services I already had on the other line. My regular line, with the "Complete Choice" plan, is around $55 a month.Actually it's a strong stomach that allows me to stand among the surrounding groveling at the alter of useless technological gadgetry and redundancy, regardless of all the idiot marketing ploys. Cell phone ubiquity is just ...

Cellular Phone Equipment. Toronto Pearson airport (YYZ) to "ban" cell phone use?
A video news-crawl story says that Pearson airport will ban cell-phone use starting this Wednesday. I suppose that this is someone's idea of improving business air-travel.Popular methods include RF-absorbent building materials, and "intelligent jammers" that identify themselves as cell towers but do not facilitate placing or receiving calls. The brute-force method is to just generate white noise on the cell frequencies. This is the easiest for do-it-yourself jamming as practiced ...

Moab Cell Phone Service ?
I know there is cell service because my AT&T phone shows service bars. But AT&T customer service can't fix the problem until I place a call while I'm experiencing the problem. However, when I'm having the problem I can't place or receive any calls, Catch 22. With the exception of downtown Moab the AT&T phone doesn't work in a 20 mile radius. Does anybody know who the Moab locals use for their cell phone service? Anybody have good or bad things to say about their provider a...

Cell phone service ?
Well, my two-year contract with Cingular/AT&T finally ran up two weeks ago, and, naturally, my cell phone died today. I'm ready to move to another service.I have T-mobile and have had it for a couple of years. I absolutely love it. They have a local place to pay or buy accessories. We got our latest phones at Costco, however. I like the plan (tons more minutes than we begin to use). No drop calls ever! That's why I switched. We were losing calls all the time with Verizon and ...

Charter Phone Service. Charter - Damn their oily hides! ?
Can you bring a cable tv with you to another house ? With DISH you can, all you have to do is get another dish and bring the reciever. Cheap cell phone service ?
Are you sure about the 500 minutes being NIGHT and weekend? I was just helping my daughter look for a cheap plan and all the Voicestream info we saw said the 500 minutes wqere weekend only, not night.Sorry about starting a new cell phone thread, but this doesn't quite fit in with the other subjects floating around in the past month. Anyway, I looked and looked to find a cheap cell phone provider that didn't charge a lot for a phone (got a free one on this plan) and had a seldom-used ...

Cheap PBX with PRI capability ?
Does anyone know of a cheap PBX system that will accept a PRI feed. This is basically for my home, as Videotron will deliver a free PRI line for 2 years, but I'll need something to terminate the line. Cheap probably means less than ?500. Maybe second-hand ?The Cirrus 8 got very good reports in CompuServe UKIT Forum - it costs about 500-600 pounds and uses POTS phones for extensions. ISDN2 plus up to 8 extensions, *and* it copes with MSN. If you're interested I'll trawl my CIS f...

Cheap Phone Service ?
Forget Pacific Bell. You no longer need them. Many companies now offer local service. The best deal in California is from MCI local. $24 per month gets you UNLIMITED calls to the ENTIRE Bay Area, from San Jose to Sonoma. Calls to the rest of California are 5 cents per minutes. They quoted me $0.10 in state and $0.15 out of state, flat rate, any time. John, you are probably correct re repair service, but Pac Bell charges lots and lots and lots of money for their normal service. ...

Cheapest Incoming-Only Phone Service? (Westchester, NY) ?
I just moved to a building that requires a local phone number for the door-intercom system to work. Everyone knows my old (cell) phone number, and I have no reason to change it or stop using it, and I have no need for any home telephone service other than my cell phone, but I need a local number. So I'm wondering: what's the cheapest way to get a local phone number which will forward to my cell?Like telco's (non-subscriber) service where any old phone can be plugged into the place ...

cisco routers and ip pbx configuration ?
This week I have been trying to find a solution how to make my Asterisk IP PBX box to work behind cisco router with NAT. I currently have problems with incomming calls after I have registered it with my sip provider. The sip registration works fine. When the call enters the linux (from internet) my ip pbx does pick up the call but no sound was passing thru. It seems like that the rtp ports arent passing thru. Could this problem be solved with "ip inspect sip" ? Or what else sho...

Is This True on Cisco?
I need to pick some brains here. Is it true you cannot do intercom paging on Cisco phone systems as well as zone paging? Also, does the system have multi-line capabilty as well as ring group capability? My management people acutally asked about this when we put Call Manager in a couple of months ago and according to the guy that did my implementation there is no traditional paging available. I have seen people working on XML apps for the phones to give a sort of paging. More like p...

Cisco Phone System Integration ?
I know that Cisco has an integration to CRM from their phone system to handle outbound dialing and screen pops. I am looking for a ballpark price. Anyone know approximately what it might cost?I think the Cisco Call Manager/Call Manager Express Microsoft CRM Adaptor is free. In terms of installation/general training cost - no more than a few hours for someone that knows it. Check with your Cisco/Microsoft CRM partner. As long as something is monitorable somehow, it should be ...

Cisco Systems Voip?
Is it me or is VOIP WAY over-hyped and WAY mis understood. It seems to be a big buzz word and frankly I don't see why. For networking remote phones and sites yes..in house..why?You can do all that now with a regular PBX. As for half the cable I would dispute that. On the contrary systems like Cisco are WAY expensive give you about half the features of a modern PBX and 1/4 the reliability. There is alot to be said to have analog capability off a PBX. You can ride fiber on a PBX....

cisco ip phone system: can calls be recorded/monitored?
the company i work for (which employs about 500 employees) is in the process of getting a new cisco ip telephone system. the phones are 7940s and they are plugged into powered panels. i was wondering if the phone system is possible of allowing people to monitor and/or record conversations without the person knowing. i have done some research on the web and found that the "call center" product(s) are capable of it. we are not, however, a call center, but just a regular company. ...

Do-it-yourself Cisco IP phone system: oxymoron or money-saver?
Our company, a small retailer with 2 branches 1000 miles apart, is considering migration to a hybrid or IP phone system, with the end of connecting these locations via fiber link. We've had a system quoted and found that labor is (shock shock) about 20% of the price. Aaggh. Now although I am a computer guy, I don't know much about IP phones in particular and what peculiarities can be expected from the difficulty level. So, I'm looking for opinions: Can a normal computer tech...

Billing System for Cisco VoIP Routers ?
Has anyone experienced this problem: I have a Cisco 3640 with an E1 voice card in it and I use it as a dial in access gateway. All the calls form PSTN are ok but when I try to make a call from the computer using Netmeeting or Quicknet Linejack I have a problem. The router receives the call, dials the desired number, when I lift the phone, call is connected and everything is ok up to that point. BUT theres no sound. Parties can't hear nothing. It can't be codec problem cause I've trie...

Normailising Phone Numbers ?
Some companies have many phone numbers so in this application I've made another table that stores phone numbers only using the company id as the foreign key. I also have another table that lists all the key people to contact in the company also linked using the company id as the foreign key. My question is how do I link a phone number from the phone numbers table (i.e. a mobile number or a direct line) directly to a person and not the company although that person works for that compa...

Cell phone booster ???
The only easiest way to view the actual signal strength is to get into the phone's diagnostic program for the dBm level. Now it depends on how much you want to spend. You could have a tower installed, correct antenna and amps to boost signal in and out. You could go with a Satellite phone. Or You could check with Internet satellite service that has the capability of using VOIP. I think I would just drive the 2 miles round trip to use the phone and tell family and friends to ...

TSC Automated Phone System Question
I submitted my k-1 application to the TSC in February and received the NOA on Feb 14. (which stated, like most of us, a processing time of 30-40 days) I've called several times to find out the status from the automated system. I keep getting the following message: "can't be found at this time" Is this the standard message when nothing has been reviewed? Should I start worrying? Anyone else hear any other types messages?this is the message that you get when they inputted your ...

Concord Telephone Company, What Does A/B Carrier Mean?
I'm not aware that the FCC ever reserved the wireline licenses for the local wireline carrier of record; in fact I can name three cities right off where a different LEC's cellular subsidiary got the license. (Indianapolis, in Ameritech territory, has GTE; Cincinnati, served by Cincinnati Bell, has Ameritech cellular service; and Lexington, a GTE city, has BellSouth Mobility cellular service, with GTE now owning the *other* cellular carrier there!)When cellular licenses were first gra...

900Mhz Cordless phone
A friend of mine suggested that I try the net.wisdom in this newsgroup for my little predicament. I'm in the market for a one of the new 900Mhz cordless phones and I haven't had much luck getting any information out of the sales-droids. I have seen two so far. One from Panasonic and one from some never-heard-of-before brand. Both looks and feels solid enough but I have no clue about the transmitting/receiving quality of the both. The Panasonic model is about 150 USD more expencive ...

Cordless phone problem
I'm having a hard time finding a cordless phone that works properly in my house. I have a 25 channel Panasonic that works great but the battery won't stay charged. I've tried about every 900 mhz and 2.4 Giga phone (Panasonic, Uniden, Sony, Toshiba, etc.) and they all have interference in my house! My microwave totally distorts any 900 or higher phone (even though the base is in the far end of the house) and there must be something else either in my house or around it that does the sa...

Portable Office Phones ?
ATT is currently marketing a portable office phone that connects with their Merlin system. Does anyone know if there are ANY security features available with that phone? It seems to me that listening for messages on home phones is just a dumb game, but listening in for messages on a busy office phone might well be considered a worthwhile job to some.I'm so glad someone else opened this worm can. The only difference between the Merlin phone and their ordinary cordless is the signal...

Phone Systems - Any Good Ones?
I have cat-5e home run wiring to every room for the phone system, so I'd prefer to take advantage of this and not use the base station + cordless type setup. Plus I've heard bad stories on both the Panasonic 4000B and the Siemens Gigaset 2040 units. I'll have 4 CO lines into my home, 2 for business and 2 for home. I would need separate answering machine messages based on the line called. I could do this through the Phone Company, but then I would like an indicator on the phone...

OT: Long Range Cordless Phones?
Can any of you tech-head pilots recommend a truly long-range cordless phone? Something that REALLY penetrates buildings, and reaches more than a hundred feet? It seems there are few players in the market -- EnGenius is the one that my phone vendor can get, for a whopping $600! (He says that's his price, and told me to shop around on line....) There are others on Ebay for less, but they all seem to be shipping from Hong Kong -- not a good thing, in my experience. We've g...

Cordless Phone Does Not Ring
I am facing a baffling problem. I have a corded and a cordless phone hooked in my apartment along with AT&T DSL internet on the same phone line. Few days back my 900Mhz Uniden cordless phone stopped ringing whenever there used to be incoming call. My corded phone continue to ring and I could even use either phones to answer the calls. There was no problem for outging calls also from either phones. Some times for incoming calls the corded phone use to ring only once and gets direc...

Landline telephone system?
Can anyone recommend a digital cordless telephone system for use on my BT landline at home? I'm looking for something that would allow me to add additional handsets (or a package that includes them). I don't need an answering message facility as I use BT's 1571 and I would want to be able to transfer an answered call to another of the handsets, for instances when I answer the phone and the call is for someone else, elsewhere in the house! The set also need to have a fairly decent...

Getting My Money Back From The Insurance Company
I just found out that I did not have any auto insurance from October 1997 to December 1997. For some reason, my coverage was terminated on October and I was not notified at all. Yes, I sent in my payment for October and November and I even have a canceled checks and bank statement to prove it. I did not bother to renew my policy b/c I sold my car in Dec. (Dec. was last months of my coverage.) I just purchased another car and went to an agent then he told me that I will have to ...

Anybody have Cricket phone service?
I heard it was like a cell phone but more like lanline with unlimited calls within the Houston area for like 30 bucks/mo. Is the reception service good? Comments or opinions?Cricket service is the best. I had Cricket service when I lived in AZ, I know when I lived in AZ, alotta people only had Cricket because it was cheaper then having a home phone. I moved to Bakersfield, CA, and we don't have Cricket here. I miss it. It was ALOT cheaper (and better) then then the Cingular service I...

Modem speed through digital pbx ?
I have several hotel customers who have guests trying to use their modems through the room analog jacks. First they forget to dial 9 and next they complain about poor connection speeeds. We have a one Nitsuko 384 and an Onyx being heavily used for modem traffic. The Onyx user is a software company and they use 8 ports to access outside lines. They are happy with the speed they get which seems to be around 28.8k. I suggested an older switch that doesn't do any data conversion to ...

Time Warner digital phone service ?
One of the reasons I was reluctant to change to digital phone was because my phone service through Qwest (US West) NEVER went out. Ever. Power went out, heat went out, cellphone went out, but the home phone always worked. In an emergency, I always could count on my landline. I was reluctant to change because I did not want to have my phone service drop out as often as my cable dropped out. I finally fell for the package deal of digital phone/internet/cable.Last fall a hurricane h...

digital phone line/analog modem ?
I'm going to be on vacation in a couple weeks, and i need to take my work with me, which means accessing the internet on a daily, hourly basis with my laptop (vaio f-560) but the place im going to be staying at has digital phone lines...now..i heard somewhere that i will need to get some sort of *converter* or something so i dont fizzle out my normal 56k modem? is this true? or is there another fix to it? just seems kinda risky plugging a standard analog modem into a digital phone li...

Digital Phone System ?
At work, we have a phone system called Meridian Mail, that they tell me is digital, and they say regular modems won't work with it. I am dieing to get a modem in there so I can alleviate boredom by logging in. ;) Is it possible? Any help would be appreciated!Meridian Mail is actually a voice mail system, not a PBX - but chances are pretty good it's hooked up to a Meridian PBX, which is digital. Your phone support folks are correct - you can't plug an analog telephony device such a...

DSL without phone service?
I'm sick of paying all this money to Qwest for 2 phone lines, especially when they keep going down like they did again today. I'm thinking about junking the home phone service and just going with the cellular for voice, and going with DSL for the computer. Do you have to have home phone service to have DSL? What's a good company to use? I'm in Central/SE Denver.DSL uses the same phone line that you are now using for voice or modem. The trick is that it can be used for voice an...

best expandable phone system ?
Is there a consensus 'best' expandable phone system? Ideally it would have an answering machine. Are there any systems that allow more than one person to be on the line at a time without conferencing them?Expandable in what way? More exchange lines? More extensions? What sort of trunks? POTS, BRI, PRI? By system what do you mean? PABX? Do you actually understand what you are asking here? Do you mean handling internal and external calls, or do you want two calls on one local loop?...

A good deal for low-cost, low-usage cell phone service ?
Lots of features, including voice mail, text messaging (15 cents to send, free to receive), caller ID, etc., all included. No extra "system access fee" either. Virgin Mobile sells several different phone models, starting as low as $49. Phones are also sold by Future Shop, Best Buy, Zellers, and Wal- Mart (although in-store prices may not match on-line prices). They include $10 in air time. Plus you can get an additional $10 "Kickback" with a referral from an existing VM custo...

CallWave: Another Free Internet/Phone Service that has switched to a Fee-based service?
Here is a example of a free internet phone service that has switched to a fee-based service. I was using CallWave while on the Internet so I could get back to the caller. It was a nice free service. Since they have decided to charge for the service, I prompty cancelled. As America's leading alternative to expensive phone lines, CallWave has worked hard to help you save money and enjoy the peace of mind knowing you can hear who's calling while you're online. Up until recently, adv...

5000 free phone lines from Orcon ?
Looking at their phone charges, it is $44.95 a month for the basic phone service, $59.95 per month for a few extras, and $40 more per month if you want unlimited national AND international calls to 30 destinations, with a one hour cap! This all on top of your Internet charges. Meanwhile, you can go to 2Talk, and get a VoIP account with unlimited calls to 40 international destinations, more features, and no idiotic call length caps, for $30 per month. Sure, you need to use your Inte...

Experiences with Frontier DSL?
Anybody had experiences, good or bad, with the DSL services from Frontier Communications? (a telco serving southern metro)? Anything in their plans to watch out for?I have Frontier DSL, but I pay the extra money to use VISI as the ISP. The DSL is very fast inbound, but outbound is limited. If you are doing the standard web/e-mail stuff, it will rock. If you are trying to telecommute or have home servers, the outbound speed is very limiting. I do seem to have 15 minute outages abo...

FRONTIER COMMUNICATIONS ?
I'm interested in learning more about this company. Thinking of doing business with them. If there's anyone out there who's done business with them, know someone who has, or just knows about this company.Parent Company RCI out of New York, they came into the forefront recently with the acquisition of other regional carriers like AllNet, World Call Telecommunications, Execuline of Sacramento, American ShareCom, and a variety of others. Their pricing is geared towards the "Big Three" ...

Cellular phone for business ?
I wonder if you can deduct a cell-phone bought just for business travel as a business expense? I was once told by my accountant that if I had another phone installed (I have two now) that only one could be used as a business expense. (I thought maybe one for the internet was a business expense since I use the internet mostly for business purposes and another phone for just business calls and then my own private phone for everyone to use would, of course, not be a business expense. ...

Home\Office phone system questions ?
I just moved in to a new house and while i'm rewireing parts of it i've seen that i need some new phone jacks. After looking i've seen i need more then a few new phone jacks so i thouhght i'd redo the whole house and i have a few questions. 1. do new houses\wireing normaly use RJ45 for phones? If so what do you do with the extra wires since phones use RJ11 2. I saw smarthome olny sells one panasonic system, who else sells other systems like that, since i dont think that there is ...

PBX For Home ?
I want to install a PBX system (landline) in my home. I've heard, from sellers/installers, that you must have an individual wire from each jack going to where the phone line comes in (i.e. a different wire from each jack to one central location -- where the PBX would plug in). Before I order a system, I want to make sure that I have the proper wiring. I do not want to re-wire my home. 1) How do I check if I have this wiring in my home? 2) Most sellers say that if I do have...

Rogers Home Phone ?
Anyone ocnsidering switching to Rogers home phone? I know there are several good reasons to switch but I believe the service requires a separate modem that requires power to operate as opposed to regular phone system that has it's own power.I switched, it does require a modem, but it has a battery backup so if the power does go out, you still got your phone service. So looked up Rogers in phone book and called their 1 888 number. What an exercise in frustration!!!!! Had to liste...

Home phone service in Ottawa?
I'm moving shortly and am considering a landline in my home again (have been on a cellphone for the last couple years, but my calling patterns are about to change and will require basically unlimited local calling for less than, say, $40 a month). I'm trying to make sure I have all the bases covered in terms of companies offering real home phone service in Ottawa. By 'real', I mean not VOIP - a phone line running into my house, old- fashioned style. No internet or other stuff req...

Home phone system?
I'm looking for recommendations of a lower-cost home phone system. Needs to be able to work with run-of-the-mill standard '2500-compatible' touch-tone phones (I do not want to have business-type instrucments throughout my house). I don't want all the bells and whistles, just perhaps 2 or 4 lines in from the street, and about 12-16 outlets in my house.Panasonic makes some very good 2 to 4 line phones for use with standard phone wiring. (No KSU) True. They make some decent phones. ...

Home Phone System ?
Can anyone reccommend what they condider to be the 'best' phone system for home/home office use?It would be nice to be able to incorporate the phone system with the home automation system (HomeVision & ACE) Many folks use the Panasonic PBXs. I've got a TD1232 with voice mail and I'm very happy with it. My biggest complaint is a few features are well, not done right like only being able to view the Caller ID log from one phone, etc. I'd say a TD816 would work well for your needs...

Looking for new home telephone service ?
Just moved and am looking for home telephone service that is reliable and inexpensive. Any of you been there and done that recently? Would appreciate your experiences in finding and using alternative home telephone service providers.Local telephone company is usually the most reliable, but a close second will be the cable company and they are usually cheaper. One weird but cool thing about the sunrocket.com VOIP service is that you can take it with you and use it anywhere where y...

I would like to know if anyone is using ISDN for their home telephone system as well as data. Currently I can get ISDN to my house and I want to run data as well as the house phone system on a 128k Terminal Adapter, m
