predicament.
I'm in the market for a one of the new 900Mhz cordless phones and I haven't had much
luck getting any information out of the sales-droids.
I have seen two so far. One from Panasonic and one from some never-heard-of-before

transmitting/receiving quality of the both. The Panasonic model is about 150 USD more

house. I have a 25 channel Panasonic that works great but the battery won't
stay charged. I've tried about every 900 mhz and 2.4 Giga phone (Panasonic,
Uniden, Sony, Toshiba, etc.) and they all have interference in my house! My

in the far end of the house) and there must be something else either in my

their Merlin system. Does anyone know if there are ANY security
features available with that phone?
It seems to me that listening for messages on home phones is just a
dumb game, but listening in for messages on a busy office phone might
well be considered a worthwhile job to some.I'm so glad someone else opened this worm can. The only difference
between the Merlin phone and their ordinary cordless is the signal... Help choosing small office phone system ? We have a one man physicians office with a 20 year old NEC 6/16 phone system
which is on its last legs. We want to replace with a new system incorporating

Siemens Gigaset 2040 units.
I'll have 4 CO lines into my home, 2 for business and 2 for home.
I would need separate answering machine messages based on the line called.
I could do this through the Phone Company, but then I would like an

phone? Something that REALLY penetrates buildings, and reaches more
than a hundred feet?
It seems there are few players in the market -- EnGenius is the one
that my phone vendor can get, for a whopping $600! (He says that's
his price, and told me to shop around on line....) There are others
on Ebay for less, but they all seem to be shipping from Hong Kong --
not a good thing, in my experience.

I'm looking for something that would allow me to add additional handsets (or

because my phone service through Qwest (US West) NEVER went out.
Ever. Power went out, heat went out, cellphone went out, but the home

chances are pretty good it's hooked up to a Meridian PBX, which is
digital. Your phone support folks are correct - you can't plug

with a one hour cap! This all on top of your Internet charges.
Meanwhile, you can go to 2Talk, and get a VoIP account with unlimited

business expense? I was once told by my accountant that if I had another
phone installed (I have two now) that only one could be used as a business
expense. (I thought maybe one for the internet was a business expense since
I use the internet mostly for business purposes and another phone for just
business calls and then my own private phone for everyone to use would, of

from sellers/installers, that you must have an individual wire from
each jack going to where the phone line comes in (i.e. a different
wire from each jack to one central location -- where the PBX would
plug in). Before I order a system, I want to make sure that I have
the proper wiring. I do not want to re-wire my home.
1) How do I check if I have this wiring in my home?
2) Most sellers say that if I do have... Rogers Home Phone ? Anyone ocnsidering switching to Rogers home phone? I know there are several
good reasons to switch but I believe the service requires a separate modem
that requires power to operate as opposed to regular phone system that has
it's own power.I switched, it does require a modem, but it has a battery backup so if
the power does go out, you still got your phone service.
So looked up Rogers in phone book and called their 1 888 number.

Many folks use the Panasonic PBXs. I've got a TD1232 with voice mail and

I'd say a TD816 would work well for your needs... Looking for new home telephone service ? Just moved and am looking for home telephone service that is reliable

We are investigating moving across from a legacy to a hosted Voip

Depends how many phone calls you make. A full speed ADSL Max upload

You may need 2 ADSL lines or something faster.

Unfortunately, this is usually in "units", and no-one seems to know how

We would like to 'link' the main office phone system to the branch office so

that port forwards to another location? The pbx box is linux and uses a

Obviously the SBS will handle the dhcp for the workstations after the

know this doesn't answer the question, but let's look at the issues
involved ...
The telephone industry, more so than electric, gas, or water, has a
very low marginal cost per call. That is, the actual DIRECT cost of
making a phone call is extremely low -- a trifling amount of
electricity to carry the call. The cost of the call is virtually the
amortization of the central office machines, inter office trunks,... Local Telephone Service, OT - internet speeds - a question Does anyone remember way back in the days of 14.4kb/s (and earlier) dial up
modems?
Then we went to 28.8kb/s
Then 36kb/s
Then 56kb/s
Back then I seem to recall much discussion (from the tellecoms people...and
in most computer mags etc) to the effect that 56k was pretty much the
maximum that could be obtained.....and that this restriction was largely due
to the last link in the chain...i.e the line from the exchange to your
house.....

are not licensed to operate their gear. Radio Hams
are qualified to design, build and then
operate their own pieces of equipment. They do this
with gusto, and also repair and modify their own

to gain, and one to be jealously guarded. The excitement that drives a Radio Ham starts with
relatively simple technologies at first, perhaps making

I am involved in a small business startup. Each employee is going to

The question is, can we come up with some way, via the 800 number, to
have the appearance that all these phones are land-lines, and in fact
connected to a main switchboard/pbx? Hence my term a "virtual

1) We can call anywhere in the US - at no charge.

3) We get rid of the "crazy" required extras the "fixed" phone company

What PBX based phone are you refering to?
You'll need a specific TSP (TAPI Service Provider) that supports this PBX.
You should contact the manufacturer of the PBX.Most PBXs supports TAPI. Either throuh a logical link via the LAN to the
PBX or via a direct connection to the phone. The actual implementation
will vary between PBXs. What PBX would you like to connect to?

where can you sign up and is there an archive available?I get the PBX security "advisory" called
"Access Denied" from Nortel - it comes out once a year at best. More

I need to be able to do fairly specific programming on various PBX systems.
Idealy speaking, the code should work across PBX platforms, but from what
I've read so far it seems that diversity in protocols are the norm.
The areas of interest are along the lines of ACD group manegement, control
of call transfers and general info that resides with the PBX but is not
available for neither operator nor normal phone sets.

that port forwards to another location? The pbx box is linux and uses a
simple netgear router for the routing to the workstations and the phone.
Obviously the SBS will handle the dhcp for the workstations after the
upgrade. The question is can I merely split the external ip at the router and
use the same address for the sbs and the phone? That's how port forwarding works. You can use one IP on the WAN side.
Th... PBX ISDN ? Does anyone know why the various PBX vendors insist on continuing to sell
their own proprietary multi-line digital telephones instead of
standardizing on ISDN?
I realize that the vendors need to support their installed base, but it
seems as if it would make more sense to head in the direction of
supporting standards at the desktop. If the various PBX manufacturers
would agree to migrate to ISDN, then AT&T could sell telephone sets to
Rolm and Northern Tel customers, etc. Ther... DSL Analog Line into PBX? We had 2 DSL lines installed by GTE a couple of months ago. They required me
to add new trunks for each circuit since they said they could/would not
attach the pots side to my Rolm PBX. I could see no reason why they could
not be connected, so today I made up my own somewhat crude RJ45 to 66 block
connections and activated two more trunks on my PBX. I connected the filters
of course.

connection to the outside from the PBX. In the central office world,
it's a connection to another central office or to a toll network, as
opposed to a subscriber.
A line is a connection to a subscriber, or in the case of a PBX, to a
station behind the PBX.
So, if you have a PBX, your connections to the phone company are trunks,
