NTL as ISP & Phone service provider ?Q. Has/does anyone use NTL as either an ISP or as a provider of telephone services. I'm considering changing from BT to NTL, looks a better deal. If you have any experience of NTL has it been good/bad/mixed. Plus it would enable me to change my email addresses and get away from those bastards who bombard me with their porn. Tried lots of different ways of blocking etc but they always seem to get through. A. I've used NTL on and off for the last 3 years for both broadband and telephone and have never had a problem with them. I use NTL for phone, television and broadband connection. When I had it installed there was a couple of problems but that was mainly because one of the under street drain things was blocked and they needed to dig the road up to unblock it. Delayed installation by a couple of days. The phone is cheap enough, the television is well, television and the broadband... A max 1Mb connection. I have 600 Kbs (£25) and a rather slow 128 Kb upload speed. It's been pretty reliable. The odd outage, once a few months ago when their DNS servers went loopy (I think this wasn't just an NTL thing though). It hasn't been running at full on speed of late either. Still very usable though. Using NTL in Cardiff. Phone and 500K broadband. They give us the analogue TV package as a freebie. Not many channels on it but we do get proper C4, E4, C5, Sky1 & News, BBCnews24 and English versions of BBC channels. So far no real problems apart from a weekend when their DNS packed up - quickly diagnosed and alternatives now programmed into network settings. Using dial-up and phone service for about 6 months, no real problems however customer service is notoriously hard to get through to and harder to get any sense out of. My folks use NTL phone, tv and broadband: phone is great, TV is "ok but not as good as Sky", and broadband is ok-ish but seems prone to the odd major spazz-out - ADSL by comparison seems much better. Overall, though, it's great value, and the whole shebang works out cheaper than Sky and a BT phone with narrowband dialup internet. I used to live in an NTL area and had all of their services. There phone services works, their Internet service is confusing due to the amount of different packages and stuff they offer. IIRC there customer service centre isnt 24 hours, so if you get a problem outside 9am-8pm your tuffed till the next day. I could be proven wrong on that as its been a while. There TV services is utter SHIT! The channel numbers are all mixed up, the box takes an age to respond to you pressing a button on the remote and quite frankly if youre going to be wanting TV as well as the phone and net, stay WELL clear of NThelL. I now use a combination of BT for voice calls, Pipex for boradband internet (There servcies centre sint 24 hours, but I have not had one single problem in about 7 months) and Sky for TV. This combo works absolutley brilliant! If anyone is Interested, Telewest were ditched after about 5 months due to the fact there TV service uses the same STB's (Set Top Boxes) as NThelL and perform the same way, Telewest also have an amazing tendency to cut your services off if you dont pay your bill within 30 seconds of it landing on your doormat.
