Business Phone Questions ?

Q. In looking to cut corners is switching to voIP services such as Vonage a good idea for a small business phone? How does the price compare with a regular business line? Does having Bellsouth offer any advantages over Vonage? I would like to hear from other business owners to see if it's reverse frugality or worth the trouble to switch.

A. I think the quality of VOIP is still spotty. I might use it for my homer phone although I have not done so but would not want to use it for business. In my case I work in telecom and is a prospective customer hears anything other than the best quality connection I have lost them. Happy with Vonage (home phone) service. But as George mentioned, service can be spotty at times. Rare and usually just minor voice quality issues. Enough to raise concern, though. For business purposes, anything less than 100% reliability is unacceptable. I opted to maintain BellSouth for business service - too important to fool around with. Another pitfall: telephone book listing Don't know with certainty how such things work, but I imagine BellSouth would have dropped my listing - in both the White and Yellow pages - had I switched to Vonage. Don't run an ad, but at least having business number/address listed in the phone book is a must, of course. All said, not worth the $10. - $15. saved by dumping BellSouth in favor of Vonage. Still a big fan of VoIP, though...
