CAR WASHING ?

Edwards Finance > Personal Budget

Q. I'm here in Texas in 95 + degree weather & a respiratory problem. So it's unlikely that I'm going to do any personal, manual summer time car washing I don't want to hurt my CR-V's beautiful finish but these are the most convenient alternatives I have open to me: (I've been using them on my 1989 Volvo which I didn't love as much as my CR-V) 1) Gas station small automatic car wash. The kind that gently sprays soap & water & then rinses. I've found it to do a good job without hurting the finish on my old volvo (I think). $3.00 2) Gas station large scale automatic car wash including hand drying & inside cleaning by hand. $8.00 better job but more expensive. Do you see any significant problems with either of these methods.? Do you have any other suggestions?

A. Both of them will make your car look like shit after about 5 washes. Always hand-wash your car. I am *sure* that the State of Texas has self- serve car washes where you buy tokens and wash your cars inside a "stall". Go at either right before dusk or early dawn, when it isn't hot and your car's paint is cool to the touch. Wash your car with a car shampoo from Mothers or Meguiers... then dry it with Absorber brand synthetic chamoise. Use the car wash stall only for the rinse water, never use their soap. And never allow the car to drip dry or "blow dry" by driving it around.
