MS PC Phone = JUNK ?
Q. The following is a typical response from the chumps at Microsoft. Before I return this piece of junk, can anyone give me any suggestions on how I might overcome these problems? I've read all the responses on this board concerning this phone and none of the solutions have worked. I thought I would try one last time.
A. When trying to install the Microsoft Cordless PC Phone System, the first part of the install tries to install Internet Explorer 4.0. During setup, I am receiving an error message the "the internet or server is busy at thistime." I looked at the help and am able to connect to Microsoft's pages without a problem. I have even downloaded IE 4.0 and tried to run the installation stand alone and receive the same error. If I just continue with the PC Phone System installation,the installation will complete and even say that IE 4.0 has installed successfully. Call manager works fine but Outlook Express will NOT run. I receive errors that "This note cannot be displayed due to an itialization error." Outlook sometimes aborts with MSHTML problems as well as other .dll problems. I have looked at Article ID Q214700 and the solution did not work. I have uninstalled the whole PC Phone System software and tried to reinstall and receive the same errors. One further note is thatthe Tutorial on the PC Phone System CD flat out DOES NOT run. You can click on the Tutorial button until your heart's content and NOTHING happens. No error, nothing. This phone and software is something that I would like to be able to use in my home as it seems to have all the features I'm looking for in a home phone system. However, if I cannot get the features to run I will be forced to return the product. I look forward to your quick response. As you probably already suspect, the problems you are having with the Phone system, stem from the problems you are having with Internet Explorer (IE). We need a component called Activemovie installed for playing the tutorial and we need Outllook Express for storing our messages (both come with IE). On a related note you may be able to play the tutorial using a different program by double-clicking the tutorial file on the CD (you'll see a file ending with a AVI extension if you look using Windows Explorer). What you are going to need to do is Contact the Internet Explorer experts(via phone or web response) and resolve the IE problems before we pursue any Cordless Phone problems. Once IE 4.0 will install cleanly and all the components run (at least Outlook Express), you'll be ready to see if the phone system has any remaining problems. Actually I expect once you fix the IE problems the Cordless Phone problems will be resolved as well. I would be happy to help you wth IE, but that is not where my area of expertise is at.
