PBX Info?Q. I was wondering where I can get some information on how PBX works. Also I was reading some electronics magazine, (maybe ETI, or Elektor Electronics) and found an article for a 10 extention home PBX system using one line. Is it possible that a PBX system needs only one line to interface with 2 or more, or do you require a line for each extention. A. To connect an analog phone to a PBX, you need a 1:1 ratio of phones to lines or ports....IF digital or mixed, you can if you design it that way, to have two phones on each port (or more if you know how but that is asking for trouble!)... Some PBXs (Nortel, Siemens-ROLM, Lucent-AT&T) have adaptors that allow analog devices to hang off their digital ports at the same time the digital phone is there!.... A PBX is merely a dedicated computer running a cross matrix of lines and station ports....the bus tying it all together digitally...the computer taking DTMF or other keypad info from the phone and doing the command the codes or digits entered. BUT interfacing to the outside world is the key in a PBX... otherwise it is merely a large intercom system. This may be backwards. You can have as many analog devices as the ring generator can accomodate. You can only have one digital device per digital port. If the digital device is so equipped it may have secondary analog ports. PBX's dont have to be computerized. The old 1A key was selector switches and relays (and a 25 pair cable per phone). I have memories of sore hands punching a wall of 66's with a hand tool.
