PBX comparison anyone ?Q. I am looking at various PBXs, the Panasonic (which many people seem to use) BBS Telecom Home/Business 2x7 (FX207) And to some extent the JDS Stargate, which if I understand it correctly, has some (limited) PBX features ? Any opinions, advice etc. on these or other PBXs in the sub 1000$ range? Add'l question: is it possible to use existing telephone wiring (perhaps special handsets) to do non pickup intercom, i.e. without dedicated audio/speakers. I'd like to pick up a phone in one room and have all phone speakers auto-on to talk through. Or do these systems intercoms all require ring, pick up phone, then listen ? A. I don't believe the Stargate really qualifies as a PBX, in the sense that the other units you mentioned do. Haven't used the BBS Telecom system so I can't really comment on it. To a large extent the choice may be dictated by your needs in terms of numbers of stations and CO lines. I may be wrong but I *think* the Home/Business system is in fact made by Panasonic. If you can live with 2 COs and 7 extensions then you would find that one hard to beat I think in terms of bang for the buck. If you need more than the 2/7 configuration, or want the ability to use 'key' phones as well as standard single-line phones, then the bigger Panasonic's are probably the way to go. You may be surprised at the number of extension ports that you might want, if not now then in the future. In addition to phones, there are good reasons for attaching your modem(s), fax machine, answering machine, etc to separate station ports on the KSU. If you want to add voicemail and/or auto attendant later then it will take 1 or 2 ports for that. Interfacing with a home automation system might require a station port and possibly a CO port as well. In other words, you might want to give serious consideration to the 616 over the 308 even if it seems like overkill right now. The nice thing about the Pansonic systems I think is that you can have a mix of single-line and multi-button phones. Many of the available features are awkward to perform using single-line phones, not to mention difficult to remember. I wouldn't actually refer to it as PBX features... more like enhanced touch-tone detection to trigger home automation events. Does not support fancy PBX functions like follow me or auto attendant. Analog analog analog -- no capability for ISDN or other digitalness. So after all this Panasonic stuff, I'd be real interested in hearing about the BBS.
