How can I get phone messages online?

Q. I have heard of services that allow a person calling you to leave a message even while you are tying up the phone line on the net. I have only one phone line and my phone service does not offer voice messaging. :( Suggestions? I don't want to pay for a second line, but I don't want to miss calls either.

A. You can also do a search for "internet answering machine" at http://www.hotfiles.com and come up with other links as well. These services are usually free, are advertisement supported (you hear the short ad before the message that was left) and require Call Forwarding on Busy on your phone line. Interesting. Callwav requires that you purchase "Forward when busy" from your local phone service provider. In my area for a little more you can purchase a service directly from the phone company that displays the name and number of the caller on the screen and allows you several options on how to deal with the incoming call.. something else to consider. Round here you call Southwestern Bell. They have the service. It works whether or not you're on the computer. If the line is tied up Ma Bell takes the message like it was an answering machine. You call in later with your code number for your calls. They charge a couple bucks a month for this over the basic phone connection.
