Post Office Phone Service ?

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. I've been browsing the Post Office website and came across their home phone service which has three different options for connection: 1) Deposit £10 and dial 1466 for the access code. 2) Deposit £10 and get a router box. 3) Deposit £50 and get a digital cordless phone to automatically route calls via the service. I was looking at option 3 (mainly because I need a new phone anyway) and wondered if there was a way to stop it routing calls via the Post Office network and instead, route them via my normal provider (BT). Is there an override code which will do such a thing? Does anyone use the service or have one of the phones, and are there any problems I should be aware of?

A. I have used this service for 6 months . I use the Prefix 1466 access code . Very reliable and cheap . No set up charge or minimum call charge . Top up either by using a card at any Post Office or by Call Centre 0808 number which rings in Spain . I don't think it is possible for the user to disable the routing on the DECT phone which is provided by Tele2. If some one knows how to, please post the solution on this NG as I would be interested too. I actually bought this, but obviously I knew that I could avoid the auto routing if necessary. In the event they supplied a basic working, if rather naf (but it was free) DECT phone. What it does not do, depsite what it says in the manual, is automatically route calls via tele-2 - so you still have to dial 1466. If newer ones did you can probably prefix 1280. You never get a bill, but can check last call and credit remaining on a free phone number. You can enable the service on as many numbers as you like, and because it is pay up front, even if it is rumbled your loss is limited to your prepayment (good for parents with kids at university). Rates are very good, especially to mobiles at the weekend (except O2), the minimum call charge is 1p, and the only problem I have had is suppresion of CLI on off peak calls to mobiles. Customer service is pretty good and based in Spain.
