Phone Headsets ?Q. I'm looking to purchase a phone headset that will let me answer/hangup the phone from the headset or little box that the headset plugs in to. Also, I'm very interested in cordless versions of the same but so far have found the price prohibitive ($6-700, Cdn). Can anybody recommend any good brands that I should consider purchasing or have any caveats about these devices? A. I use Plantronics at work, and it works wonderfully. Before we got these, we tried out a headset from Hello Direct (?) that was awful because it did not work well around a lot of computers. I would hear static during the conversation when anything (headset, wires) was moved, and when I typed on the keyboard. The static was =so= bad that I couldn't hear the other person on the phone which didn't make for a very productive telephone conversation...not to mention the impression people would make about our company. The Plantronics have little or no static interference. We use the Plantronics Supra NC Binaural headsets. These are the high end series which are great. Don't confuse them with the consumer grade stuff you'll find in an office supply superstore. I had a Plantronics rep agree that it's sad they use the same name on both lines as it's confusing to compare to 2 lines of headsets. Retail is about 240.00 but the street price is around 185.00. They have quick disconnect and are in use for hours at a time. About 2 years ago I found a handsfree cordless phone for about $200. It consists of a base/cradle which plugs into the wall jack and a walkman-size unit with the numeric pad, on/off hook button, head set, and a belt clip. I *loved* this unit -- it was the ultimate in phone phreedom. I'm amazed that the rest of the world hasn't caught onto this idea. Unfortunately it developed a short in the headset wire which causes mucho static. I've been unable to locate the manufacturer or a local repair shop that will touch it. At the moment it's torn apart on my desk in my vain attempts to fix. It was manufactured by Wicom/Wiser Industries. If anyone has information on how to contact this company, or a *reputable* company that sells a similar unit, please *do* tell.
