Changing the Call progress tones on Norstar Phone system ?Q. We currently have a Norstar Modular ICS key telephone system, and it is currently being used in a office in Guangzhou, China. Since the system was brought over from North America, the call progress tones (ie. Ringback, dialtone, busy tone etc.) are North American style. What I really want to change is the Ringback tone which is sometimes confusing to callers (in China) who don't usually hear the 440Hz+480Hz North American tone. And they would sometimes hang up when the call is being transferred. Does anyone know how to change the 440Hz+480Hz tone (2 second on, 4 second off) to a Chinese style 400Hz tone (1 second on, 3.5 second off)? on a Norstar phone system? A. You almost certainly can't do this, without, at the very least, completely replacing the software load, which is unlikely to be cheap. You might try calling Nortel and asking them... it's that sort of question. Alas, I can only remember ther 800 number, which won't do you much good. They're in RTP NC, among other paces, you might try +1 919 directory assistance. The system was purchased in Canada and shipped there. It was then connected to the phones lines I ordered in China. I think China has already approved such a system since I noticed that the Canadian Consular office in Guangzhou also uses such system (I saw the phones in their office). When I call the Canadian consulate, I also notice that the "ringing tone sounds like the one in North America when transfered. What I am really hoping to do is to "adjust" the settings by just going into the configuration. I just don't want the trouble of changing the software just for the ringing tone Changes of the nature to the system would require a complete re-design of the system programming. There are no plans at this time to develop a system specifically for the Chinese marketplace. Wouldn't it it possible for Nortel to design an "International Version" for the Norstar which allows the users to select the features such as ringback tone, ringing cadence etc. that is common in their country? I hear there are DMS-100 switches in other countries such as China, but have never encountered a North American style ringback tone there.
Other Questions: Is it me or is VOIP WAY over-hyped and WAY mis understood. It seems to be a big buzz word and frankly I don't see why. For networking remote phones and sites yes..in house..why?You can do all that now with a regular PBX. As for half the cable ...
