PBX (Norstar) and modem ?

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. it would seem to me that you could use the modem in conjunction with the 4 wire phone line that comes out of the wall if you knew the appropriate Norstar PBX commands to send from your modem prior to the phone number (i.e. what commands does the phone itself send when you place a call...). Is their any device/software written (preferably inexpensive) that I can put on the end of the 4 wire phone line before connecting it to the phone which will allow me to see the commands the phone is sending when I place a call? If not, is there any place I can get the commands to place a call through the PBX?

A. the line that powers your phone is a digital port off your norstar ksu,you cannot run a modem off this port, you need a analog line for a standred modem to work----norstar has a ata adapter(although only 9600 baud is supported on the older atas--i have used them to 14.4 ok)--- you might be better off splitting the outside line from the phone co before it goes to the ksu The norstar is a key system, not a PBX (though it has some features that could fool you into thinking it is a PBX). It is not well suited for analog "single line" ports. The sets the system uses are 2 wire, "digital to the set" propriatary signalling. I doubt that anybody besides Nortel makes a box that breaks out the signalling and the voice (data) and makes it look like POTS. The northern box that does this is AWFUL! The software that runs it is worse! It's a great key system, but don't try to use it as a PBX.\ The Norstar phones are digital telephones that run on 1 pair of wires back to the KSU station port. These digital ports are not compatible with analog devices such as answering machines, single line phones and modems. It is not a case of sending the proper commands to the Norstar, analog devices cannot interface with the digital ports. It would be like hooking your parallel printer up to your serial port, the protocols don't match. What you need to do Terrence, is extend one of your telephone lines to your desk location. Your inside wiring is most probably 4 pair wiring, with your Norstar set being wired on the Wht/Blue Blue/Wht pair. This leaves you 3 additional pairs of wires for other use. Simply bridge one of the trunk lines from the Norstar to an open pair feeding your jack location. The "Hello Direct" box that you speak of connects to the handset jack of a Norstar set, allowing an analog 2-wire connection into the set as well as allowing the handset to continue to function. Does it work? Apparantly well enough to allow "Hello Direct" to continue to sell the device. Would Northern Telecom get all upset about it being connected? Not really. If your set was to cease functioning, I would suggest that the distributor would consider the warranty void. (Unless they were party in supplying the adapter.) If your phone started acting weird, our first suggestion would be to remove the adapter. What the adapter is doing isn't particularly magical or bizzare, it's basically a 2 to 4 wire hybrid, so I can't see it doing or allowing much damage to occur to the set. Do you really need four? Or can four of you share one modem line? Anyway, what you describe will not work because the NorStar is a two-wire digital system. What you need is called an ATA (Analog Terminal Adapter). You should be able to find them for US$200-250. You plug the ATA into an available NorStar port and plug your modem into the ATA.
