modem and multi-line phone system ?

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. I have tried to hook up my modem to the phone line system at work. It is a multi-line system, where each line has it's own number. You have to press a line for the line you want to dial out on. How can I get my modem to work on this system. Are there any settings I need to change??

A. Well in your DUN connections there is a configuration option where you can tell it to dial x to get to an outside line... so setup that number to be whatever code the outside line is *0019 for example. First thing you need to determine is if it is a multi-line analog or digital system. If it is a digital phone, you can damage you modem if you plug it directly into the same wall jack. Some digital phones have 'analog' ports on them. (Lucent MLX10DP w/MFM module for example). There is also a device that is made that will make your 'analog' modem work on a digital phone set by routing the modem through the handset connector. I would recommend that you contact the person in your office that is responsible for the telephone system since they should know the best method of connecting your modem into the system. Normally on the phone system side, I'll terminate the house cables on a punchdown block, more toward a 110 block with CAT-3 cable because of the high twist in the pairs. If you're doing 12 cables, it is a little more expensive to use a 100 pair 110 block with 12 4-pin connectors than a single 66 block with bracket (about twice as much). At the station jack, I can now use a 4-port faceplate, terminate two pairs for voice, and two pairs for the second jack, and have one or two CAT-5 jacks on the other side. The reason for doing this is that all stations look the same. At the frame end, your phone jacks are least likely to change; a station will normally stay where it is put, or, AUTO SET RELOCATION can be used. The data side can change or break, and your most change will come with the data side. An RJ-45 plug on solid wire is most likely to fail with frequent changes, so a $2.00 patch cord is an easy choice to discard.
