narrow angle microphone for recording from a distance ?

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. I'm looking for a microphone that can record a player speaking from ~ 30m , the microphone should be mounted to the auditorium's ceiling and would point exactly at the player. I want the player to be recorded clearly without much background noise. I'm quite new at the field, could anyone recommend me of any equipment ? is there a good place to look for such things

A. You want a parabolic dish mike. For voice only, you can live with a one-meter dish if you can stand not having any low end. The 1.5 and 2M dishes will give you lower corner frequencies but will still sound like a telephone. You cannot have it on the ceiling, it needs to be on the side, and pointed directly at the player. You may need a couple of them on different sides. You must be pointed at the player's mouth, not the top of his head and not the back of his head. Yes, this will require an operator at each mike, and the operator should probably receive IFB or at least a tap off his own mike signal so he can hear what he's doing. Check it out at the next AES show. It's interesting because it basically can null out one or two individual loud sources, but it falls apart when it's in a deep reverberant field. Even so, it was lots of fun playing with it and pointing it around, and it's definitely a lot more useful in bad situations than a typical shotgun. Such a microphone does not exist. The closest thing would be a hyperbolic dish mic which would still be insufficient from that range and would sound quite bandwidth limited. Lower the ceiling, drop the mic closer from the ceiling
