DSL and Lucent Merlin Phone system ?

Edwards Finance > Phones

Q. I have ordered DSL service from USWest. We currently have the Merlin Plus phone system. Does anyone know if I need to have a phone jack installed on the line before it goes to Merlin? USWest is know help.

A. It certainly wouldn't hurt, and might save some serious headaches. If it is a difficult proposition, try it without, first, and if it doesn't work, install one pre-Merlin. If it is fairly easy to access, install it pre-Merlin now, and save yourself some potential headaches and the potentially DSL eating interference. Yes it is DEFINITELY necessary to filter the line before it goes into the Merlin. You will then need to have a separate unfiltered pair that goes directly from the demarc to the DSL modem. This usually works. If for some reason you still have problems you may have to take the DSL line out of the phone system completely and have it go directly to the DSL modem only. I have a complete AT&T Merlin Phone system with all the extras (conference call, transfer, music on hold, etc, etc) that I would love to sell. I recently closed my business and have no need for this elaborate phone system at my house. Asking price: $600.00 O.B.O. My small businesses' Merlin 820 Telephone System quit today. The power supply mains input fuse was blown, and from the looks of the splatter inside the 3AG SloBlow it was a pretty big overload, not just an "old age" failure of the fuse. The power supply itself is labeled "338A Power Unit" (and is circa 1985). It appears to be a pretty well built conventional switcher with a chopper running off a mains voltage rectifier an multiple dc outputs. I tacked in a replacement fuse which vaporized as soon as I applied power, and a "phut" and flash from the main circuit board pointed me to an "exploded" ceramic disc cap with half its body burned away. The cap's location is marked C308 or C309 (the bottom half of the last digit is blown away too). Without reverse engineering the circuit board, I can see that one end of this cap connects to one side of the main switching transistor, and the other side connects to one end of a paralleled diode resistor pair going G_d knows where.
