BT Merlin PBX ?Q. Does anyone have details of how to setup a BT Merlin Series 1 EET PBX? Both BT and Plessy seem to be unhelpful A. Unfortunately Series 1 EET does not identify which of the several Merlin PBXs it is. EET is merely the manufacturer code indicating it was made at the former British Ericsson Telephones plant at Beeston (later Plessey). Telecom Consultants Ltd (0161-442 2202) can supply copies of manuals for virtually all post-1980 PABXs and key systems. The price is commercial but competitive, around £15 a manual, and they also supply all spares as well as complete second-user systems. The company is run as a commercial business and trades with businesslike people only; anyone giving the impression of being outside the trade or a hobbyist will be turned away. If you can give me some more info on it, like what does it look like, I might be able to help. As you will have gathered by now, the details you gave don't mean much by way of identification. There is usually some branding on the outside casing. Actually, it's a magazine I edit and someone else publishes -- the world's only magazine devoted exclusively to the history of television technology and programming. Four 96-page issues a year, been going nine years now. Many people do actually keep 405 alive by running old TV receivers through a standards converter or else by playing programmes recorded in 405-line format from a standard VHS recorder. Other even use 405-line cameras. It's all as ingenious as the people who use UAX-to-UAX signalling over the PSTN to create a 'virtual' DC5-signalling network!
