Q. For a graduation gift, I got a copy of the Mechanical Engineering Handbook, 5th edition, by Lionel S. Marks. I'm sure some things have changed since it was printed in 1952. Is this copy worthwhile to hang on to, or should I get the latest edition?

A. -My uncle gave me a copy of Mark's 5th when I got my first drafting job in 1975 (I still have it and keep it close by) and recently invested in the 10th edition, I was not disappointed. I'd recommend you get the new one, but keep the old one, I believe it's the last edition that was edited by Lionel S. Marks before he passed away. If you do decide to get one, try Mcgraw-Hill's Mechanical Engineering Book Club -The basics of mechanical engineering haven't really changed and won't. Keep it and use it. You can always order a new one at any time. SAE has them as a standard item.
