{FS} AT&T/Lucent Phone Systems ?Q. Does anyone know of a reasonably priced source for the one Farad capacitors that retain memory in the software cartridges for Norstar and Lucent telephone systems? A. I measured them this morning. The Lucent cap is one inch in diameter, and the Norstar cap is 3/4 inch in diameter. They are both rated 5.5 volts, 1.0 Farad. It all depends upon the material of the cap. A 1.5 volt alumininium cap is about the size of a "number 6" cell (2 inch dia/6 inches tall). I've even seen one. The ones used in phones are of Tantalinum (sp?) or some such exotic material and are quite small. Yes, if you desire one that will store LOTS ov energy (e = c * v ^2), then it will be large. I had a capacitor bank that was used for a line printer. It contained a bunch of caps that when finally connected was about 1/2 farad at 35 volts. The terminals were large enough to hold battery cables similar to those found in a car. It could (and did) deliver LOTS of amps. Various arc marks around the terminals were in evidence, along with molten metal deposits from fools that thought they could discharge the thing with a screwdriver. An equivalent circiut for a hi capacity capacitor is a rechargeable battery. Yes, it is polarity sensitive, but pretty equivalent. Also check the max current draw for your substitution. This large a cap the material used can handle small amounts of current or it will be damaged. Enter "farad capacitor" into their parts search. The Panasonic P6955-ND looks like what you're looking for. Technology has come a long way. I remember being told that a 1F capacitor would be about the size of a house. These are well under a cubic inch, and cost about US$6.
