Long distance phone serviceQ. Our local phone service is provided by Verizon, and I make all my long distance calls using my cell phone. Do I have to sign on with a long distance (land-line) phone service provider? A. SBC used to charge a fee (penalty) for not using any long distance provider. Don't know if they still do this or not though... When Verizon was my land line phone service I chose to cancel my LD provider for both home and office. Verizon didn't charge for this "priviledge". That was 3 years ago and I've used my cell phone's "free" long distance and LD calling cards from Costco ever since. Hawaiian Telcom just bought out Verizon in Hawaii and it will be interesting to see what happens. I'll need to keep a close look at my statements for awhile. Verizon does not charge a monthly penalty for selecting "none" as long distance provider in NJ, NY and PA. You do not need a long distance carrier. Just tell the LD carrier and your local phone company to cancel. If you ever need to use your land line for long distance simply use a phone card or a dial around service.
