i need some information about Jordan School District. Who can help me?Q. i need some information about Jordan School District. Who can help me? A. > 1. Name/Location/Size of school district? Jordan School District is the largest of Utah's 40 school districts with a 1999-2000 fall enrollment of 73,093. The district covers approximately 250 square miles in the southern half of Salt Lake County extending from the Wasatch Mountain range on the east to the Oquirrh range on the west. The District's borders encompass eight municipalities and unincorporated areas of Salt Lake County. The municipalities of West Jordan, South Jordan, Riverton, and Draper are experiencing dramatic growth while other areas of the District are experiencing moderate or no growth. http://www.jordan.k12.ut.us/guests/index.htm > 2. When do students begin regular, in-class band instruction? 7th grade > 3. How often/how long are the class periods in the beginner program? Daily 50 minute classes are split into homogeneous groups when class size permits. This can depends on the enrollment in the other classes, but I've had homogeneous classes as small as 4 kids. > 4. How many instructors are responsible for the beginner program per > school? How many students are involved? One teacher per school, usually teaching a combination of band and general music, but sometimes (like me) also teaching orchestra. A few teachers with small enrollment also teach in another area, like foreign language. > 5. How often/how long do students have class in the middle school/jr. high > program? Class is held each school day for 50 minutes. We're a middle school, but we use flexible team scheduling that allows daily classes at the same time. > 6. How many instructors/students are involved in the middle-level program? > What grade levels? I am the band and orchestra teacher at our school. I have around 70 seventh graders, 68 eighth graders and 26 ninth graders. (We had a problem with the counselor a few years ago that was resolved with her replacement. The recruitment drop was a one time thing, but will effect our feeder system for another three years.) > 7. Are groups like jazz ensemble offered in the school day schedule, or are > they extracurricular in the middle-level program? Extracurricular and usually non-compensated. I teach a 3 day a week early morning jazz band and a once a week afternoon percussion ensemble. > 8. What grade levels are in the high school program? How many students? All of the students at our school, along with half from a nearly identical school and a few students from a third school attend the High School in our feeder system. The High School is grades 10-12. The band program has around 100 students. > 9. What courses are offered in the regular school day? Concert Band (mostly 10th grade) Jazz Band (10-12) Symphonic Band (mostly 11th and 12th but with a few 10th graders.) > 10. How many staff members spend all or part of the day at the high school? Only the High School band director. I work as an assistant in the marching band program during marching band season, but it's not part of my regular contract. > 11. To what extent do the teachers at the beginning, middle, and high > school programs team-teach? Are the schools "vertically-staffed"? Not at all. The High Schools use an alternating 8 period schedule. Students go to four classes each day. The middle schools use a traditional schedule with each class each day. > 12. What aspect(s) of the large-scale structure of the program benefits > students the most? The least? Our program doesn't seem to have any large scale structure. We just got a new music specialist at the district level who is trying to create more cohesive teams. > 13. Do you have a district music administrator? What is the scope of the > administrator's involvement in your programs? Our district administrator develops the general curriculum outline, manages district level festivals, secures grants, and facilitates and enables the classroom teachers. Before entering administration she was one of the more successful band directors in the district.
